Newly Elected Board Announced at Annual Meeting in Chicago

During this year's annual meeting on April 9 in Chicago, The Machinery Haulers Association presented to its members the newly elected board of directors that will serve the organization for the next two years.

The seven individuals who were elected to the TMHA Board embody the diverse group of members that the association represents. This collection of volunteer leaders all began their terms immediately following the conclusion of the annual meeting that was held at the Chicago Marriott O'Hare Hotel.

  • Jon Coca, Diamond Transportation System
  • Mike Connell, Bennett Motor Express
  • Clayton Fisk, Warren Transport
  • Dave Gallano, Gallano Trucking
  • Jeremy Ihle, Ihle Transport
  • Heather Johnson, Landstar Transportation Logistics
  • Tom Witt, Roehl Transport

Mike Connell will head the group as president of TMHA, taking over for now past president Jon Coca. Also serving as officers will be Dave Gallano and Tom Witt as the first vice president and second vice president, respectively.

Five of the board members were re-elected from the previous two-year terms. Johnson and Witt are the two new board members, both of whom are serving for the first time.

The two individuals Johnson and Witt replaced on the board were Aaron Tennant, of Tennant Truck Lines, and Jim Towery, of Steelman Transportation. Both were exemplary leaders who helped TMHA raise its bar of excellence. Their expertise will be missed by the board but their involvement with the association will not be lost.

FMCSA Issues Final Rule on ME Certification Integration

A final rule was published on Thursday by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for the Medical Examiner's Certification Integration, amending the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to require certified medical examiners performing physical examinations for commercial motor vehicle drivers to use a newly developed Medical Examination Report Form.

The rule, which becomes effective June 22, 2015, also requires that the results of physical examinations, including examinations where the driver was found to be not medically qualified, must be reported to the FMCSA by midnight (local time) of the next calendar day following the examination.

The final rule also facilitates the electronic transmission of Medical Examination Certification information to the FMCSA's National Registry to State Driver Licensing Agencies.

Transportation Secretary Hopeful of Meeting Restart Study Deadline

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx reassured senators on Wednesday that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is aiming to complete a study on a recently suspended hours-of-service rule by the September 30 deadline.

Foxx expressed his confidence during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing, noting that a consultant has been hired to perform the study. He said they are proceeding on pace and that the FMCSA is hopeful it will be able to meet the deadline established by Congress.

Foxx added that the process would be transparent, probably responding to concerns several members of Congress have raised this year about the FMCSA's handling of the study.

FMCSA Considering "Beyond Compliance Program"

The FMCSA published on Thursday a Notice of "Request for Public Comment" in its Federal Register seeking comments on a proposed "Beyond Compliance Program."

The FMCSA is evaluating the impacts of considering a carrier's proactive, voluntary implementation of state-of-the-art best practices and technologies when reviewing a carrier's safety. The agency is requesting responses to specific questions, and any supporting data that it should consider in the potential development of the program.

Comments must be received no later than June 22, 2015. Participation in the program would not result in regulatory relief.

Roadcheck 2015 Will be June 2-4

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced it will conduct its 28th Annual International Roadcheck enforcement period June 2-4.

During the annual three-day event, approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified inspectors (local, state, provincial and federal) conduct compliance, enforcement and educational initiatives targeted at various elements of motor carrier, vehicle, driver and cargo safety and security for both truck and bus operations.

This year, Roadcheck will place a special emphasis on cargo securement. CVSA is choosing to highlight cargo safety as a reminder to drivers and carriers of the proper loading and securing of cargo on vehicles is a matter of public safety. For many types of loads, particularly those that are not sealed or otherwise inaccessible to the driver, regulations require the driver to stop within the first several miles of a trip and recheck the tie downs and other load securing equipment.
