TMHA Completes Web site Redesign

The Machinery Haulers Association is excited to unveil a new Web site design for the organization. View it now at www.machineryhaulers.org.

The process of overhauling the site started in late spring and was led by a subcommittee of TMHA board members -- Jon Coca, Mike Connell, Dave Gallano and Jim Towery. This group helped vet proposals submitted by development and hosting companies, and then subsequently guided the creation of a new online presence for TMHA.

The primary objective was to transform the old site into something that would exude pride and enthusiasm while also capturing the attention of prospective members. This was mostly accomplished through the improvement and development of:
- A home page that makes an immediate statement with the image slideshow
 - Three feature boxes under the slideshow that highlight important items specific to TMHA
 - Navigation toolbar at the top of the site that features a drop-down menu for each section to expose subpages for quicker access
 - Logos for all members --- carriers and allied --- with links to the members' Web sites
 - An online membership application so prospective members can join directly through the site
 - An enhanced news section for better browsing
 - Archived issues of TMHA's monthly e-newsletter linked as a news subpage

In addition to the new appearance and features that have been imparted on the site, a mobile version of www.machineryhaulers.org was also created. Having the site mobile responsive (or optimized) ensures compatibility on all smartphone and tabloid devices for people viewing it on the go.

It's being encouraged by the TMHA board for association members to link www.machineryhaulers.org from your company sites in any place you may reference your affiliation to TMHA. It's a great way to provide increased visibility for the site!

CARB Set to Enforce Aero
California's Air Resources Board issued regulatory guidance this week saying that the state is cleared to enforce elements of its emissions regulations that require truck and trailer owners to install aerodynamic add-on devices and use certain tires.

CARB's guidance issuance comes two months after the Environmental Protection Agency issued California a waiver allowing it to enforce in full its greenhouse gas regulations.

In June 2013, CARB asked EPA for a waiver of the preemption, which would allow it to enforce the GHG regulations for 2011-2013 year model trucks and 2011 and later trailers.

The equipment required by CARB is verified by the EPA to improve fuel economy and therefore reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

NTSB to FMCSA: Ban Hands-Free Phone Use
Truck drivers should not use hands-free phones while driving, says the National Transportation Safety Board.

The board's recommendation came in the wake of a 2013 truck-train crash that caused a derailment, hazmat fire and explosion.

The crash occurred May 28, 2013, in Rosedale, Maryland, when a truck driver failed to make sure there was not a train on the tracks he was crossing.

One key contributing factor was that the driver was distracted by a call that came in on his hands-free phone just as he was approaching the tracks.

The trucking company had a long record of non-compliance with safety regulations -- a record that should have triggered FMCSA action.

The board recommended that the FMCSA conduct a full compliance review on new entrants that fail a safety audit or a corrective action plan, or are issued an expedited action letter.

Equipment Purchases to Decline in 2015
There will be a slight decline in equipment purchase plans for 2015 versus what was planned for 2014, according to the CK Commercial Vehicle Research's 2014 Annual Fleet Study.

Sixty-six representatives from small, medium and large for-hire, private and government fleets operating 40,000-plus Class 8 vehicles responded to this year's 20-question survey.

Other key points from this year's study include:
- Driver shortage is the key issue facing trucking fleets impacting their ability or willingness to add capacity
 - New technology that maximize safety and or fuel efficiency
 - In-house maintenance still the preference although some changes are occurring
 - Original equipment truck manufacturers playing an increasing role as a resource for fleets
