Baseball Returns Home for Weekend Set Against Portland

Fresh off a two games to one series victory at University of the Pacific, Santa Clara baseball returns to Schott Stadium to host the University of Portland April 4-6. The Broncos and Pilots meet for the series opener Fri., April 4 at 6 p.m. and will also play at 3 p.m. on April 5 and 1 p.m. on April 6.

Last weekend, the Broncos went to Stockton and took two of three games from the Pacific Tigers. Santa Clara won the series opener 6-2 on the strength of two-RBI nights from Greg Harisis and Mac Hess as well as 7.0 innings from D.J. Zapata in which the senior allowed two runs. After Saturday's game was postponed due to rain, the Tigers won game one of Sunday's doubleheader 7-0 and the Broncos won game two 7-6 by erasing a 4-0 deficit in the fifth. Stockton native Kyle Cortopassi came through with the game-winning RBI single in the ninth.

The Latest on the Broncos' Bats and Arms 

Greg Harisis returned to the lineup against Pacific last weekend, recording a double, a triple and two RBIs in his first game since March 15 vs. Penn State. He leads the Broncos with 13 extra-base hits on the season...

 

Since making his first start of the season Feb. 28 vs. Oklahoma, Kert Woods has hit safely in 13 of 17 games and has not gone more than one consecutive game without a hit. He has reached base safely in six straight games entering the weekend, and has team-best marks with a .432 on-base percentage and six stolen bases.

 

Stevie Berman currently has a team-best four-game hitting streak. He has reached base multiple times in three straight games.

 

Friday's probable D.J. Zapata won his second game of the 2014 season after pitching 7.0 innings and giving up two earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts March 28 at Pacific. In his previous Friday start, Zapata threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run in a 1-0 loss to the Pepperdine Waves. In his last two Friday starts, Zapata has allowed three earned runs on 17 hits in 16.0 innings for a 1.69 ERA alongside two walks and five strikeouts.

 

Saturday's probable Peter Hendron leads all Bronco pitchers with 25 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. In his last start March 30 at Pacific (game one of a doubleheader), the sophomore threw 6.1 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a 7-0 loss to Pacific.

 

Sunday's probable Steven Wilson went 4.0 innings in his last start March 30 at Pacific (game two of a doubleheader). He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts, finishing with a no decision. His .245 opposing batting average is tops among Santa Clara starters.

Meet the Future of Bronco Baseball: Joe Becht

Today, Bronco baseball announces the 11th member of its incoming class of freshmen for 2014-15, Joe Becht. The shortstop currently attends Downers Grove South High School in Downers Grove, Ill.

"My road to Santa Clara was an unexpected one," Becht said. "I am a kid from Illinois who was looking at schools only in my region. I liked the other schools but did not have that feeling when you know it was the one. Once I talked with the coaches at Santa Clara, I immediately got that feeling. They were great guys who I wanted to play for."
