A Message from the Superintendent  

As Superintendent, I am proud that our district has continued to identify and expand opportunities and resources for our students to be successful in school and life.  That's why I'm especially proud to announce that Birmingham City Schools is one of only 41 recipients nationwide, one of two statewide, and the sole recipient of a GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) partnership grant in Alabama. We have been awarded a seven year, $19 million dollar grant to put more students on a successful college track, and we plan to do that through a program that we have developed called Pathways to Success (PTS).

With a goal of strengthening school leadership to increase student achievement, Birmingham City Schools is proud to present an impressive administrative roster of both new and veteran Principals to lead the system .. 

  
to witness what many are calling a new era for Birmingham City Schools. Notable of the many speakers was student from Lewis Elementary.  The fifth-grade student, Israel Torres, led the charge for the event.  He pleaded with the new board saying, "We're counting on you for your leadership.
