Dr. Grizzle represents good in district

We are proud of Dr. Alison Grizzle. If you haven't heard yet, she is a math teacher at Jackson-Olin High School and the new Alabama Teacher of the Year. It is Teacher Appreciation Week, and we also recognize the contributions of all of our teachers.

Dr. Grizzle was named Teacher of the Year at a ceremony in Montgomery May 8. Those of us who were in the audience were impressed with the words she spoke.

She said she was humbled to be chosen as Teacher of the Year but she was standing as a representative of BCS and Jackson-Olin, which is a high-needs school. She said schools like hers have been labeled as failing when, in reality, they are thriving.

I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. Grizzle. There are great things occurring in all of our schools, including Jackson-Olin. While Dr. Grizzle is an outstanding educator, we have wonderful teachers on every campus, teachers who are dedicated to the children they teach.

That is why schools like Jackson-Olin are making progress. Teachers have been trained to be Advanced Placement instructors and have greatly increased the AP offerings available to our students. Dr. Grizzle teaches AP statistics and often stays long after the school day ends to lead study sessions.

There has been a flurry of media attention surrounding Dr. Grizzle's selection. Thousands of stakeholders have viewed the Facebook posting about her, hundreds have click "like" and dozens have posted congratulatory comments. All of this is shining a positive light on our system.

I congratulate Dr. Grizzle and, at the same time, urge parents, students and other stakeholders to  recognize the greatness that exists in Birmingham City Schools.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Carver students will visit Europe  in June
Group will travel to France and Spain

This June, seven juniors and seniors from Carver High School will be traveling to Europe for a nine-day adventure in France and Spain with Explorica Inc.

The Carver Foreign Language Department worked closely with administrators and the seven high-achieving students from the French and Spanish classes to coordinate the details and raise funds for the trip.  The students reached out to their friends, families, teachers and communities to ask for donations, conducted on-campus fundraisers, networked on Facebook and completed a successful letter-writing campaign to community partners such as the Carver Alumni Association and the American Cast Iron Pipe Company to raise a total of $25,900.

Seven Carver students, as well as faculty members, will visit Europe in June

During May, Spanish teacher Rebecca Blumenfeld and French teacher Shelly Fordice are conducting a series of mini lessons about the histories and cultures of France and Spain with special emphasis on the sites Carver students will be visiting as well as the language challenges they will have to pass.

The language challenges are based on the thematic units the students have studied in their foreign language classes, such as greetings and polite conversation, ordering food in a restaurant, discussing prices and shopping and navigating travel arrangements or requests for assistance in the target language.
