Students shine in competitions
Anyone who went to the Southern Museum of Flight Feb. 7 knows for sure that there are wonderful things happening in Birmingham City Schools. Students from every grade level in schools across the system were at the District-Wide Science Fair. Their projects were set up around the museum, next to exhibits like the one focusing on the Tuskegee Airmen and their Red Tail planes. The projects themselves demonstrated the inquisitive minds that our children have, the kind of teaching they are receiving in their schools and the students' ability to do research and come to conclusions. It was an impressive event, and one of many that are occurring around the district. Students presented social science projects last week in the district Social Science Fair. Schools have completed their spelling bees, area bees have been held and winners are preparing for further rounds of competition. High school students are preparing for the oratorical contest that will be held later this month. Students now are preparing for school math derbies, which will produce winners who will represent their schools at district events. Academic bowl teams also are practicing for system-wide events that will occur in April. All of these competitions prove that the Birmingham City School System is filled with bright, talented students who want to go beyond ordinary daily learning, as well as teachers who are there to help them meet their goals. Sincerely, Craig Witherspoon Superintendent Birmingham City Schools |

Pre-K applications to be taken Feb. 12 to March 1
Lottery drawings planned March 11 to March 14
Birmingham City Schools will be taking applications for pre-kindergarten classes for the 2013-2014 school year between Tuesday, Feb. 12, and Friday, March 1.
Parents must fill out an application at the school of their choice during the application period, with the cutoff being at noon March 1. The schools are Avondale Elementary, Bush Hills Academy, Hill Elementary, Hudson K-8, Huffman Academy, Lewis Elementary, Phillips Academy, Sun Valley Elementary, South Hampton Elementary, West End Academy and Wylam K-8 School.
Because more parents apply for pre-K than there are slots available, the district uses a lottery system to fill classes. Applications at each school will be placed in a container. Applications will be drawn to fill each 18-student class and waiting lists.
Lottery drawings are scheduled for Avondale, Huffman and Sun Valley at 6 p.m. Monday, March 11; Hill, Hudson and Lewis at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12; South Hampton, West end and Wylam at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, and Phillips and Bush Hills at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14.
