Committee is open to all parents

One of the most important jobs of a superintendent is communicating with stakeholders, especially the parents who entrust their children to us 180 days a year.

That is why I make a point of meeting with parents frequently. It is also the reason behind the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee, a group of parents and guardians who meet with me regularly to be updated on events and progress in Birmingham City Schools.

The committee is open to all parents and guardians who want to participate, not just a preselected group. I would love to see new faces at the next meeting, which is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Room 123 of the Lincoln Professional Development Center, 901 Ninth Ave. North.

This time, the featured speaker will be Dr. David Patterson, director of special education. He will speak about the progress that is being made in ensuring that our special needs students receive the services they need.

There are many things happening in our schools, including the career academies that began this school year in six of our high schools. We are working to focus more of our resources on the classroom, to use data to provide individual students what they need and to provide teachers and other employees with professional development programs that assist them in doing an even better job.

The advisory committee agenda will include district highlights and comments and questions from the audience. It will be an opportunity for parents to give their opinions and get information they want.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Glen Iris a winner in urban education awards
School is bronze winner in first round

Glen Iris Elementary Principal Michael Wilson got word this week that his school is a bronze finalist for the Excellence in Urban Education Award.

The awards are presented by  the National Center for Urban School Transformation at San Diego State University. About 25 to 30 schools with the greatest evidence of academic strength for all populations of students were selected as bronze winners.

A team of educators will make a site visit to Glen Iris in January. The field will be narrowed down to silver finalists and then to gold. The silver winners will be announced in March, with the gold winner being named at the National Symposium on Excellence in Urban Education in May.

Bush Middle teacher wins grant
Students will be able to use math program

Moriel Purnel, a National Board Certified teacher who teaches math at Bush Middle School, has won a $1,600 grant that will allow the school to use the ExploreLearning Reflex math program for a year.

The program provides full use of Reflex for one classroom of up to 35 students, initial training and ongoing support for participating teachers, as well as an opportunity to provide feedback throughout the grant period. The program is available for up to two qualified educators per school.

For public schools, there is also a limit of 10 grantees per district. In order to be accepted into the grant program, applicants must describe in detail their teaching experience, their goals for using Reflex and their strategy for a successful implementation.

Bush Middle plans to use this program as an additional resource and school improvement tool. Teachers who are interested in applying may email purnell@bhm.k12.al.us or contact Bush Middle School at 231-6000.
