School safety and positive environments

As we come back from the holidays, we are still reminded of the awful tragedy that occurred in Connecticut. As the students of Sandy Hook Elementary and our students returned this week, our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the parents and loved ones that have been impacted

In addition, we want our students, parents, staff and community to know that we take school safety very seriously as a part of the educational process. Even before this incident, BCS has continued to review and refine our safety protocols to address current and potential threats that could cause harm. We have ramped up those efforts, from periodic searches, to facility safety/management and drills and practices.

We also value the strong partnership with the Birmingham Police Department that provides training and support in dealing with school safety issues. This includes collaboration with our own security staff in the school district. Know that additional efforts are ongoing.

We thank our stakeholders for the support, questions and concerns in regards to school safety and security at this time.

Sincerely,

Craig Witherspoon

Ramsay freshmen participate in mythology fair
Event includes costume contest

Ramsay High School pre-AP English 9 students participated in a Greek mythology fair in December.

The students culminated their literature unit on Greek mythology with a project-based activity that

included costumes and Greek food. The Mythology fair provided an opportunity for the scholars to learn that ancient myths are part of modern life.

The students recited facts about Greek gods and goddesses. Students explored how Greek mythology has influenced modern day poetry, music and literature.

The event allowed students to reflect on the role of classical Greek and Roman mythology in the books they read and in the videos they viewed. The students shared how mythology is found in poetry, classics, adventure stories, love stories, and even comic books.

Students dressed in Greek attire representing their favorite Greek figures. A costume contest displayed the creative costume creations and the winners are: Nyalin Jefferson, Kenya Harris, Brianna Sledge, Maya Quinn, and Jesse McNabb.

Tineka Peoples and Tamberly Tackett, National Board Certified English teachers, coordinated the event.
