Retina Scan Iris scans, facial recognition and fingerprint scanning are just some of the latest tools now available to local police. Departments are gearing up with new high-tech, hand-held equipment to make their jobs easier. But, strong Constitutional challenges are likely brewing. They will center on your reasonable expectation of privacy as a U.S. citizen and the unreasonable search of your person without a warrant. 

 

Be aware that if you give your consent, the police may conduct a search that would otherwise require a warrant. Schneckloth v. Bustamonte, 412 U.S. 218 (1973). When you haven't given your consent, however, questions abound about the police's ability to employ certain electronic data collection techniques. For instance, can the police scan your iris without a warrant? Is your biometric data protected by the Fourth Amendment? At what point have you consented or given permission to the collection of electronic data?

Strauss Troy attorney Matt Fellerhoff was  selected by Mariemont Village Council to fight a road plan that will relocate state Route 32 through part of Mariemont's south 80 acres. The proposed relocation is one piece of the Eastern Corridor project, which claims to expand public transportation, upgrade interchanges and build new roads in order to reduce traffic and increase connectivity between western Clermont County and downtown Cincinnati.

For the eighth straight year, Strauss Troy's Make a Difference (MAD) Team is sponsoring an essay contest at Taft IT High School. This year's topic challenges the students to reflect on safety in schools and to propose ways to better protect students from danger. The top writers will be invited to join the MAD Team on May 1st for the Queen City Underground Tour, followed by lunch at the firm and an awards ceremony. Dr. LaVaughn Henry, vice president and senior regional officer of the Cincinnati branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, will speak to the students. The top essay winner will receive a laptop computer. The purpose of the program is to encourage the pursuit of higher education in the field of Information Technology.
