Jesus' Best Insults
by Dave Barnhart

"Anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." So says Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:22). He claims that words spoken in anger are the moral equivalent of murder. But by chapter 23, he's pretty angry at the religious leaders. "You blind fools!" he shouts during a chapter-long rant (Matthew 23:17). He calls them hypocrites, snakes and vipers, everything - as the saying goes - but a child of God. We all know that insulting people is incompatible with Christian teaching. But Jesus actually did it quite a bit. Read on for some of Jesus' best insults ...

Worship on August 7
8:00, 9:30, 11:15am, and 5:00pm

This Sunday we continue the morning worship series, "The Big Questions," examining some of the biggest questions of our faith and responding in a way that makes sense for our time and place. Senior Pastor Mariellen Yoshino and GroupLife Chairperson Kim Jones will give the message at all morning services about "(How) Should We Live Together?" The scripture is Colossians 3:14-17. Holy Communion will be served.

At the evening Creekside Crossings service, we will have a special guest preacher and worship leader, Wayne Kerr. Wayne is a worship pastor in Katy, Texas, a recording artist, and travels several weekends each year to share God's message through music and worship. All are welcome.

United Methodist Women Offer Mission U

Mission U is an opportunity to learn about missions and develop ideas for spiritual growth programming and social action you can take back to your home church. Every year, the national United Methodist Women offer new topics based on its current emphases. This year, the topics are:
  • Spiritual Growth Study: The Bible and Human Sexuality: Claiming God's Gift
  • Issue Study: Climate Justice

In California-Nevada, Mission U events on these topics are planned for August 5-7 in Merced, August 13 in Visalia, August 20 in San Rafael, and August 27 in Roseville. Visit the conference UMW website for more information and to register.
