The Gospel of Pokmon Go
by Kira Schlesinger

Flickr_pennstatelive By now, you've probably heard about the phenomenon of Pokmon Go, the augmented reality game for smartphones that quickly skyrocketed to the top of app store download lists. On Sunday morning, I discovered that my church was a Pokestop - as are many churches, synagogues, historical markers, and other signs.

Already, Christians have pounced on the opportunity to welcome players to the church grounds, providing water, charging stations (the game notoriously sucks battery life), and opening the door for restroom use, presumably with the hope that players will return for worship on Sunday. While hospitality to one's neighbors is never a bad thing, the level of excitement over a video game literally delivering people to the front door of churches is a bit discouraging. It seems as if this is what many congregations have been waiting for, people to come to them rather than taking initiative to go out into the neighborhoods and communities themselves. ... Worship on July 31
8:00, 9:30, 11:15am, and 5:00pm

This Sunday we begin a new morning worship series, "The Big Questions," examining some of the biggest questions of our faith and responding in a way that makes sense for our time and place. Pastor Sam Lewis will give the message at all morning services about "What's the Point of Living?" The scripture is Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, 2:18-23.

At the evening Creekside Crossings service, Pastor Sam will preach again, this time on the topic "Get Comfy," from Jeremiah 29:4-14. All are welcome.

Follow Starfire Singers on Tour
July 25 - August 6

Starfire Singers, our high school choir, is currently on tour in the Rocky Mountains, taking the message of original musical Borderless to United Methodist churches in Colorado and Nevada. You can follow the youth and adults as they work and play through photos, blog posts, and even live-streaming of their performances on the Starfire Singers website.

Movie Night for Kids
Friday, August 5, 6:00-8:00pm, Room 8

Kids in the first through fifth grades are invited to watch the original Ice Age movie, share a "cool" snack, and talk about the faith message in the movie. Kids are encouraged to come in pajamas or comfortable clothing and bring pillows to spread out around the room while watching the movie. Parents may enjoy a summer date night! RSVP online or direct questions to Lisa Conway.

Hope's Corner Adds Thursday Showers
Thursdays, 9:00-1:00

Hope's Corner, a mission outreach program of LAUMC, has added a second day of free showers for the homeless and needs volunteers to check in/out homeless guests and ensure cleanliness of the shower facilities. LAUMC member Bob Lee is organizing the volunteer recruitment (ages 18 and older; volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) for Thursdays from 9:00am to 1:00pm. For more information and to sign up, visit the Hope's Corner website.

Hope's Corner offers showers on Thursday and Saturday mornings. An informal survey found that for almost half of the people who use the showers, Hope's Corner is their only option for getting a shower. These guests greatly appreciate the opportunity to safely shower, which contributes to their comfort, health, and self-esteem.
