September is here...

Where did August go?! The warm weather lulled me into thinking we had an endless summer when suddenly the winds picked up and the thermometer dropped. There is plenty going on - Comprehensive Plan public outreach, a Public Health survey, the Prosecutor's legal actions, and a "Coffee with the Commissioner" event in Clinton.

Comprehensive Plan Outreach
   Island County Map
The County is updating its vision and goals in a long range planning document. This is a countywide discussion about how the County should grow over the next 20 years
and needs your input. This document was last updated in 2005 and the current effort must be done by June 30, 2016.
To sign up for the email distribution list and stay informed on opportunities to get involved in the process, send your name and email to: Compplan@co.island.wa.us
Your input is always welcome. You may also follow this link to submit comments anytime.
On September 14th from 2-4 pm the Planning Commission will have a public hearing on the Countywide Planning Policies.
On September 28th from 2-4 pm the Planning Commission will have a public hearing on the Shoreline Master Program (no net pens - yeah!)
Feel free to offer comments, even if you can't attend in person.
Soon there will be a survey mailed to a random sampling of islanders followed by public meetings scheduled around the county, all to gain your input on rural land use in the unincorporated areas. I'll send another notice out when those dates are set. Stay tuned!

Coffee with the Commissioner

coffee_cup.jpg Please join the conversation on Thursday, September 17th at Make Whidbey in the Dodge Building, at 8898 Hwy 525 in Clinton from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. This is an opportunity to talk with Helen about local government topics. All are welcome.

Distracting lawsuit filed

For many years, Island County has been in litigation over Comprehensive Planning actions, often having to redraft the legislation once adopted. This is inefficient use of tax dollars, contentious and less productive than desired. In the current update process the Board decided to try and improve this. State law allows for Boards of Commissioners to seek expert, outside legal assistance with the agreement and oversight of the Superior Court Judges. We did this to help us draft legislation which would be more defensible if challenged. Prosecuting Attorney (PA) Greg Banks has filed a lawsuit to question our authority to do this. The Board is willing to work collaboratively with the PA's office and leverage resources.

Recently the Stanwood Camano News ran an article explaining this situation.
Unfortunately this is a costly and unnecessary distraction to the long-range work needed to be accomplished by June 2016.

Take the Public Health Survey

Island County's Community Health Planning is a collaborative effort to evaluate the health of our population, and coordinate the activities of many organizations toward improvement. Public Health staff is striving to identify and prioritize a few specific issues to focus on over the next 3-5 years, and commit to a coordinated plan to work toward those goals. That coordinated plan is called the Community Health Improvement Plan. The Community Health Assessment is the first step in our Community Health Planning process. You can read more about this in a recent Whidbey Daily article.
There are only 4 more days to act...It will take just a few minutes. I hope you will take part: http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/IslandHealth
