Advocacy Trip to DC
Recently I traveled with the Washington State Association of Counties to talk to our congressional delegation in the "other" Washington. Here I am pictured with members of the Snohomish County Council visiting our Representative Rick Larsen.
Top county issues we discussed were the need for continued federal investment in surface transportation infrastructure and transit, the Marketplace Fairness Act and the unfair loss of federal medical benefits for jail inmates prior to conviction.
While in DC I took the opportunity to visit Navy officials in the Pentagon and discuss the local community impacts from the Growlers at OLF. I shared a letter co-signed by Coupeville Mayor Conard and myself acknowledging the importance of proper training for Navy pilots to appropriately prepare for deployment to aircraft carrier duty. Proper protection for the local community is equally fundamental. Being patriotic and wanting a decent night's sleep are not mutually exclusive. The letter listed several suggestions:
  • Additional noise/vibration mufflers for the Growlers
  • Operational changes to mitigate the impact of practice flights
  • Noise/vibration reduction for local homes and businesses

This is an ongoing conversation. I reported back to my fellow commissioners and was glad to hear their support for my efforts. County and city officials from Jefferson, Skagit and San Juan Counties are interested in collaborating to share a voice for our local community to Navy leadership and seek solutions. Mayor Conard and I continue to stay engaged with Rep. Larsen, Senator Cantwell and Senator Murray as well.
