DISTRICT 1 NEWS
January 2014
Happy New Year! This will be a very busy and exciting year for me as I move into my 6th year as a commissioner. During 2014 I have the honor of serving as Board President for the Washington Association of Counties. Though there will be some added duties, please rest assured, my commitment to our local communities will continue to be my top priority. I am excited that this will afford an opportunity to bring attention to our County while representing all 39 Washington Counties at the state and federal levels. Below are updates, announcements and other items of importance for our local community. Please share this newsletter with others. All are welcome to subscribe.
EA-18G Growler Scoping Comments Wanted
fighter_planes.jpg
The U.S. Navy hosted a series of open house meetings last month to gather public comments on the scope of the analysis and content being addressed in their Environmental Impact Statement for the Growler planes.  Here is a link to the comments I submitted.

In response to input from surrounding counties and community requests the Navy has extended the comment period to January 31. This is good news and greatly appreciated. Here is a copy of the Navy's press release. I urge your participation in this important public process.

Mayor Conard of Coupeville and I will continue our periodic meetings with NAS-WI leadership to discuss the OLF training exercises. It is my desire to keep communication lines open and seek short term strategies to lessen the impacts of pilot training to the local community as the EIS process continues.

 Senior Services of Island County

Do you know someone struggling to care for aging parents? Are you elder-hiking-couple.jpg overwhelmed with trying to find and sort out information about services available to seniors? Perhaps you have a neighbor looking for activities to stay fit. Being able to juggle these challenges so folks can safely stay in their homes as long as possible is a concern for more and more of our citizens. In fact, the demographics of our community are aging so rapidly, in the near future over 50% of Island County's population will be over 50 years old.

The group at the forefront of advocating for and providing services to those in the second half of life is Senior Services of Island County (SSIC).

Contrary to what the name implies, this organization is a non-profit, not a government entity. The County does contract with SSIC to provide vital safety net services on both Camano and Whidbey Islands. Thousands of meals are delivered to homebound seniors by volunteers and served at congregate meal sites. Information and assistance is available to help families with counseling, care options and to navigate the red tape of federal and state programs. Respite care is available as well.

One of my various duties as County Commissioner includes serving on the Board of Directors for SSIC so I get to see firsthand the great work being done.

Please visit their website. and share this valuable resource with others. Whether you need help or would like to help others, the folks at SSIC look forward to hearing from you.

NACO County Presidents in DC

Recently I traveled to Washington, DC with Washington State Association of Counties Executive Director Eric Johnson. The National Association of County Officials (NACO)  invited the state presidents of all 50 associations to gather and share information. Here we are pictured in the Treaty Room of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House where we received reports from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the US Department of Transportation and the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. While in DC, Eric and I took the opportunity to meet with our state's congressional delegation on issues important for counties. It was an exciting experience and I felt our input was warmly received. I'll return to DC one more time this year in March.
Island CountyFairgrounds Plan in February
Please mark your calendars and save the date of February 18th for a public meeting to talk about the future of a beloved public asset, the Island County Fairgrounds. There is a rich history with many family stories and it is a wonderful community property.  We love this place! However the reality of maintaining so many aging structures under current economic conditions and how to keep it viable for the annual fair, must be faced. To that end, the County Commissioners have contracted with the Economic Development Council to create a strategic plan for the property. This will be the topic of the February 18th meeting. It will be held in the evening  at the Fairgrounds. Details to follow.

It is an honor to serve you,

Helen Price Johnson
