Replacing Shoreline Homes |
A recent Viewpoint printed in the local papers written by former Commissioner Mac McDowell has raised some concerns I'd like to address. There is a section of the Shoreline Master Plan (SMP)which cites state code concerning restrictions on replacement of "non-conforming" structures which have been damaged more than 75%. This provision is actually a hold over from past versions of t he County's Shoreline Plan, not a recent change as Mr. McDowell alleges. In fact, it began when he was in office. During the recent Shoreline Plan update I was successful in bringing forward favorable consideration of our historic beachfront communities which are so prevalent in Island County, while preserving a balance with the sensitive shoreline environment. Since the 75% rule came to light I have requested that this issue be brought forward for Board discussion once the Dept. of Ecology sends the document back so we can make changes.
Here is a link to the portion of the SMP regarding replacement. Your comments are welcome. To comment directly to David Pater at the Dept. of Ecology, his contact email is DAPA461@ECY.WA.GOV. I would appreciate it if you would also send a copy of your comments to me at the address below. Thanks for being part of this important community process. |
