DISTRICT 1 NEWS
April 2013

Spring has sprung
Our community continues to make me proud. Hats off to the first responders and neighbors who coordinated efforts to support the Ledgewood community in the wake of the landslide. Details follow on how you too can help. The Commissioners will revisit roadside recycling later this month. And I want to highlight the work of a local organization actively supporting economic development. Enjoy the sunbreaks and be sure to splash in a few mud puddles this month just for the fun of it!
Whidbey Slide Relief FundLedgewood Slide

Our amazing community has pulled together to support the neighbors impacted by the recent slide. A benefit concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th from 2-7pm at Greenbank Farm, with a variety of musical groups including the one and only Johnny Bulldog. Tickets are $20. If you'd like to donate and cannot attend, you may do so at any Wells Fargo Bank branch.

The March 27th landslide at Ledgewood Beach was bigger than anything in recent memory and though many households were severely impacted, thankfully no one was injured. This event drew national media attention and many of us heard from far away friends and family as a result. After a tremendous community coordinated response the emergency incident command now rests with the County. Click here for updates on the slide area and recovery efforts through the County website.

Whidbey Roadside Recycling Reconsidered

Roadside recycling is the topic of a public hearing April 22nd. This 6:15pm meeting will be held in the Commissioners' Hearing Room in Coupeville, with a video link available in the Camano Annex. The Board will decide whether to stop the implementation of roadside recycling on Whidbey Island by Island Disposal (ID). In December the Board voted to grant the request to provide ID subscribers with this service. Your testimony is important. Public comment will be taken at the meeting or you are welcome to email your input to [email protected] prior to that date.

Island County
Economic Development Council (EDC)
Island County MapLast month the EDC held its annual luncheon featuring Skagit Valley College president, Dr. Thomas A. Keegan. He provided an informative talk including an overview of the ways the community college can help meet the workforce needs for our county. I have the priviledge of serving as the Commissioner's representative to the Island County EDC, and want to be sure you understand what services they provide. The EDC provides direct assistance including business planning to companies across the County who need support to maintain, expand, or relocate their business.  Sign up now for a business workshop coming May 8th on business financing. The details are available through the EDC website.  There is also a wealth of information about Island County demographics and statistics.  Contact EDC Director Ron Nelson for more information at (360) 678-6889 or email [email protected].

Coffee with the Commissioner

The Anchor Books event was very well received. Thank you to all who attended. We had a great discussion about a variety of County issues.  I am working on setting a date and time for the next one and will be sending a notice out once that is ready.

Be sure to forward this email to others who may be interested. Thanks for your civic participation. It is truly an honor to serve the citizens of Island County.

Best regards,
