June 2013

 Greetings,

Summer is finally here and there is no better place to enjoy it than right here. For a listing of local things to do with your family and friends, check out the Island County tourism website.  Also, I want to let you know of a few important issues facing local government right now. Your voice is important to the process. Thanks for your interest.

Fireworks in Island County

Monday, June 24th at 6:15 there is a hearing in Coupeville to discuss aligning the Island County fireworks ordinance with state law. The current code bans the discharge of all illegal fireworks and allows use of "safe and sane" fireworks from June 28 to July 6. State law limits the days of use from June 28 to July 5. I have been contacted by many citizens wishing to further shorten the days allowed due to their concerns for pets, wildlife, safety, noise and littering. If you have an opinion on this please attend the meeting or send an email to bicc@co.island.wa.us and share your comments.

Here is a link to the official documents being considered:  Ordinance C-46-13 Aligning Island County's Fireworks Regulations with the State Fireworks Law, Chapter 70.77 RCW, Repealing ICC 14.03.120, and Adding New ICC 9.08A.010

Law and Justice Levy

The capacity of our local law and justice programs is stretched to meet our community's needs. There are two opportunities in District 1 to learn more about a proposal to help fix this problem. A presentation will be made at the June 24th Monday evening meeting in Coupeville about a Law and Justice levy being considered by the Commissioners as a possible ballot measure in November. Here is a link to the document. Another public meeting on this topic will be held on 7 pm, July 10 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on what law and justice services are important for you and if you would vote for additional funding to support them.

OLF Field Community Meeting

On Wednesday Mayor Conard and I hosted a community meeting with representatives from our congressional delegation to hear about the recent transition to the Growler planes at OLF and how that has affected Central Whidbey residents and businesses. Many people turned out and shared their concerns. We are currently compiling all the input and will be scheduling meetings with congressional staff and Naval Air Station Whidbey leadership to talk about what we heard and look for ways to mitigate the impacts.

Soon our communities will be gathering to celebrate our nation's birthday and remember to count the blessings of the freedoms we enjoy.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with ideas, questions or concerns.

It is an honor to serve you,
