Dear Dharma Friend:

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ani Karma Wangmo, the long-time friend of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra who died in Mexico on Sunday. We only learned of Ani Wango's illness on the eve of her death, or we would have taken steps to notify KTD sangha members about her condition.

Ani Karma Wangmo and Esme Breitenstein, Elizabeth Kelly's daughter

Ani Karma Wangmo, Susan Albright, was an American-born student of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, from whom she received ordination as a getsulma or novice nun. Subsequently, she undertook a 12-year silent retreat at KTD under the direction of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche.

After completing her twelve years in retreat, Ani Wangmo became a renunciate in the yogic style. From then on, news and rumors about Ani Wangmo was the stuff of legend...that she lived in a beach house along the sea, that she embarked on an ocean voyage in a small boat with only her cat for company, etc.

When informed of Ani Wangmo's death, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche offered the following reflections: "We feel very saddened by Ani Wangmo's passing from this life. It must be that she has passed for the benefit of other beings. At KTD, we are performing Chenrezig and Amitabha practices and dedicating the merit to Ani Wangmo's continued progress toward higher enlightenment and greater activity for the benefit of all sentient beings."

Sincerely yours in dharma,
