Mansion Monthly

February 2015

Meet me at the Mansion!

Greetings from the Mansion!

The Mansion is grateful for all of its valentines - those who support it in so many ways!  When we visit with guests, we learn of many local community connections;  people who in one way or another helped, worked at or supported the Mansion or know someone who did over the past 40 years.  Even our out-of-town visitors "connect" by sharing their positive impressions of the Mansion and Conrad family with us in the Gift Shop after their tours.

The Conrad Mansion Board of Directors is busy planning many exciting events for our 40th anniversary celebration that begins July 2015 at the annual 4th of July Ice Cream Social and runs through June 2016.  Announcements will be made soon.

Later this month, the Mansion is hosting the second of three Glacier Institute Thursday night lectures.  Please join us for these educational presentations.  Details below.

Thank you and Happy Valentine's Day to ALL of our valentines!

Additional information about February's lecture

Lecture Title: Wildlife Encountered by Lewis and Clark by Dave Shea

This presentation by Dave Shea highlights the Lewis & Clark "Voyage of Discovery" from St. Louis to the Pacific and back, focusing on the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish the explorers encountered and first described for science. These include everything from tiny hummingbirds to the immense California condor. Significant sites along the way of interest to historians will also be discussed.

Dave Shea earned his M.S. in Resource Conservation and his B.S. in Wildlife Biology from University of Montana. He has explored Glacier National Park during his thirty-five years as a supervisory backcountry ranger and biologist. In addition to working for the Park Service, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a wildlife biologist and botanist. Dave has published several works including Bald Eagle Concentrations in Glacier National Park, Animal Tracks of Glacier, and Glacier's Bird and Mammal Checklists.

Back in the Day .... Vinegar Valentines

As the name suggests, these valentines, popular in Victorian times, are not the sweet sentimental cards usually seen on Valentine's Day.  Around the 1900s, vinegar valentines were commonly sent as a way to let people know you don't like them.   They could be playfully mocking to downright insulting. The vinegar valentine had a few common elements; a comic sketch, a few lines of verse and anonymity - the card was not signed.  There was a card for pretty much every social ailment.  Below are two examples of this once-popular fad.
1908 Vinegar Valentine for a Hapless Dressmaker
1900s Vinegar Valentine for a New Automobile Owner with no Mechanical Skill
