November 2014

40 years gift to city

Greetings from the Mansion!

Since 1941, Thanksgiving has been celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.  Prior to that, President Lincoln proclaimed the date to be the final Thursday in November and the national holiday was first celebrated on the same date by all states in 1863.

The Thanksgiving holiday gives us an opportunity to reflect on the many blessings received over the past 40 years.  Our many supporters have attended tours and Mansion events, purchased memberships, volunteered and made monetary and other donations.  This support helps us keep the dream of Alicia Conrad Campbell alive. The Mansion  is a community icon and a tribute to Alicia's pioneering parents.  Thank you.

Back in the day - Cutlery Boxes
Cutlery Box on Sheraton Buffet in Conrad Dining Room
Getting ready to carve the turkey and looking for a knife?  When the Conrads celebrated Thanksgiving, knives were kept in this decorative case on display in the dining room.  Some of the most elegant and often ornate were in the styles of Robert Adam, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton.  This beautiful, locking box has a sloping top because raised veins would showcase the handles of knives when opened. Mahogany and satinwoods were most common, occasionally inlaid with marquetry, or edged with boxwood which was resistant to chipping.

Historic Clothing Exhibit

EXTENDED FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

"A Glimpse at
Downton Abbey Era
Fashions at the
Conrad Mansion
1912-1923"

Due to the popularity of this clothing exhibit, it will be on display until the end of the year with a few new additions.  The exhibit has been enhanced with several examples of colder weather clothing that have replaced the summer dresses.

Pictured above are two late afternoon dresses 1912 and 1923, respectively.

In addition, three coats are now on exhibit.  There is also a cocktail or dinner dress from the late 1920's as a look forward to the new season of Downton Abbey coming in January 2015.

For this exhibit, the Music Room is the venue of a winter wedding, complete with a bride and groom enjoying a festive toast and for the guests, a holiday punch.

Many thanks to Teresa Knutson and Sarah Safford for planning and executing the Conrad Mansion's historic clothing exhibits.
