Mansion Monthly

October 2014

40 years gift to city

Greetings from the Mansion!

October ushers in the end of regular tours at the Mansion.  You have less than a week  to visit this Kalispell treasure. The Mansion is closed for regular tours on Monday, October 13, and ends its season on Wednesday, October 15.  Tours begin at 10 am and the last tour starts at 4 p.m.  Reservations are not required.

Although the Mansion is closed this coming Monday for regular tours, if you have Columbus Day off, consider attending a Nooks and Crannies Tour.  Information about this specialty tour is contained in this newsletter.

The Mansion's 40-year milestone is right around the corner.  The city of Kalispell agreed to accept ownership of this historic home from Alicia Conrad Campbell, Mr. Conrad's youngest daughter in December 1974.  Community support over the years has allowed us to mark this anniversary. We are grateful for your continued support!

Tom Gruenwald Outdoors (TGO)
on the Sportsman Channel
to feature the Mansion!

The Mansion has learned that it will be featured in an upcoming episode on the "Tom Gruenwald Outdoors" (TGO) TV program on the Sportsman channel.  The episode, Ice Cold Kokes, will run in early November.

Earlier this year Tom and his film crew were in the Flathead Valley to shoot three ice fishing episodes.  In addition, the crew visited and filmed other highlights of the Valley, including the Mansion. We are absolutely thrilled to have the Conrad Mansion showcased on this national TV show.  Be sure to check your local listings to watch all three episodes.

To learn more about TGO's  "All Ice Fishing, All the Time!" click here.  Visit Tom's Facebook page  where he has posted outdoor pictures of the Mansion.

To accommodate TGO's out-of-town TV viewers who may visit during the winter months, the Mansion has made arrangements to be open by appointment.  A 24-hour notice is appreciated.

Nooks and Crannies Tours
Columbus Day
Monday October 13
3 - 6 pm
Tours run every 30 minutes
Limited to 10 people per tour

Do you yearn to peek behind closed doors, pull open furniture drawers and lift lids?

The Nooks and Crannies Tour will take you into areas of the Mansion not accessible during regular tours. Guides will open closet doors, reveal secret compartments in drawers and share many other interesting tidbits about the Mansion.

You'll see where Alicia Conrad etched her name in several windows, look inside Mr. Conrad's office desk, and find out what's inside the unique Conrad family picnic box. You'll visit the third floor veranda where summer parties were held and step inside the back porch walk-in cooler.

Tickets are $25.00 per person, members $20.00.  Because each tour is limited to only 10 people, reservations are required.  Call 755-2166.  This tour is not recommended for children under 10.

Join us for a memorable tour that offers a rare glimpse into areas only seen by people who lived or worked at the Mansion.

This event is a fundraiser.  All proceeds benefit the Mansion.

Ghost Tours
A Huge Success

Author Karen Stevens in the Gift Shop

At the recent Ghost Tours, Karen Stevens, author of three books, Haunted Montana, More Haunted Montana and Glacier Ghosts, Legends and Mysteries, signed copies of her books in the Mansion's Gift Shop. Stevens grew up in a haunted house and has been fascinated by ghosts ever since. In Haunted Montana, Karen tells of her visit to the Mansion several years ago. What ghostly activity did she experience?

Are you attending a Halloween party and planning to take a gift for the host/hostess? Perhaps you have a friend who loves Halloween and ghost stories.  If so, consider  giving one of Karen's books.   If you've already started your Christmas list, Karen's books may be the special gift you're looking for.

Karen's books will be available for purchase in the Gift Shop.  The Gift Shop is open during normal business hours, Tuesday through Friday during the off season.  Please call ahead, 755-2166.

Back in the day - Ice Fishing
Ice Fishing around 1910
To coincide with the October premier of Tom Gruenwald Outdoors (TGO) "All Ice Fishing, All the Time!" TV programs filmed in the Flathead Valley, this column highlights ice fishing back in the day.

This early photo shows the bare essentials needed for an ice fishing outing.  A short pole, a tin bucket to sit on, a net to drain off the water and a basket to bring home your catch.

With his ear flaps down, gloved hands, rubber boots and turned up collar, this die-hard shows the concentration necessary to fill his basket.

To learn more about the sport of ice fishing today, don't miss TGO, starting its third season this month, on the Sportsman Channel.
