40 years gift to city

Greetings from the Mansion!

September is back to school time!  As students hit the books, Mansion staff is busy getting ready for two upcoming specialty tours.   Information about the Nooks and Crannies Tours and Ghost Tours is contained in this newsletter.

Regular tours of this elegant historic home continue until October 15th.  The Mansion is open Tuesday through Sunday with the first tour beginning at 10 am and the last tour starting at 4 p.m.  Reservations are not required.

In December, the Mansion celebrates a 40-year milestone.  The city of Kalispell agreed to accept ownership of this historic home from Alicia Conrad Campbell, Mr. Conrad's youngest daughter.  Community support over the years has allowed us to mark this anniversary. We are grateful for your continued support!

An After School Pastime
Yesterday's Skateboard?
This vintage toy, on display in the third floor elevator landing of the Mansion,  has raised  the question:  What is it?  A skate or a scooter?

The toy has an overall length of about 16" and has an adjustable feature found in early skates.  A wing nut on the bottom allowed you to lengthen or shorten the distance between the toe guard and backstop for a custom fit.  But unlike a skate, this toy only has three wheels and there is no mate!  Could it be the predecessor of today's popular skateboard?

Once the toy was custom-fitted to the shoe, the other foot could be used to push and away you go.  The hard rubber wheels date the toy to around the 1930s when an advertising slogan appeared, "Speed with less noise." Earlier wheels were made of steel  There is no makers mark anywhere on the toy.

Is the little boy in the vintage postcard above concentrating on his studies or the fun he'll have after school on his skate/scooter?

Women wore tailored suits as a way to show sympathy for the men at war in their uniforms. The mannequin wears a navy blue wool twill jacket and skirt.

These clothing items are on display in the Blue Room.
