40 years gift to city

Greetings from the Mansion!

May is an exciting time at the Mansion as staff prepares for the  May 15th opening day.   Guests will see a new historic clothing exhibit, furniture brought out of long-term basement storage, and a fresh look to many of the Mansion's rooms.

Staff is also excited about the upcoming 40-year milestone. In December 1974, Alicia Conrad Campbell signed paperwork that gave her childhood home to the city of Kalispell to be maintained as a tribute to her pioneering parents.  As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, the Mansion is reliant on funds received through tours, memberships, donations, special events and promotions.  Thank you for your support over the years!

Finally,  Mother's Day is only a few days away, May 11.  The  Mansion is offering a special Mother's Day gift package. Details below.

"A Glimpse at Downton Abbey Era Fashions at the Conrad Mansion 1912-1923"

The popular PBS series Downton Abbey provides the backdrop for this year's Historic Clothing Collection. The series' first season began with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and its current season ended with the year 1923. Following this timeline, the exhibit displays beautiful examples of women's fashions during this time period.

The clothing collection, displayed on the second and third floor of the Mansion, includes a total of 18 items.  Twelve are women's fashions, three are men's and three are children's outfits.  For more information on the exhibit prepared by Teresa Knutson and Sarah Safford, click here.

Back in the day -
Hatpins Banned
 from Public Places

Between the 1880s and 1910s, fashionable women wore upswept hair, interwoven with hairpieces, to support their large hats. Hatpins measuring 12"-14," like these shown in the photograph, were needed to hold the hat in place.  (Note:  The standing ruler measures 15.")

The points of these hatpins often protruded beyond the hat posing a safety hazard to those who unwittingly got too close.   As a result of numerous injuries, laws were passed in big cities, like Chicago, banning the wearing of hatpins in public  areas if the pin extended  beyond ½" of the hat's crown.

Protests were organized by women who argued that the hatpin served as both their escort and chaperone when traveling alone. The postcard below illustrates that "point."

The Mansion's Gift Shop has a nice assortment of period  hatpins for sale.  Reproduction hatpins are also available.

A Gift from Candace Anderson Fish

This beautiful parlor vase lamp was recently donated by Candace Anderson Fish.  This "Shieks & Camels" pattern lamp was probably made during the 1900s when the new Moorish influence and the revival of the book "Arabian Nights" fascinated America.

The Mansion's Violet Room is the new home of this rare, decorated opal art-glass parlor vase lamp. The shiek and camel decoration compliments the Middle Eastern tapestry screen currently on display in the room.

Out of Storage ...

During the Mansion's downtime,  staff has been busy removing sheets from furniture stored in the basement for many years.  Wonderful pieces were revealed - tables, chairs, footstools, etc.

This 1975 inventory photo shows an original mirror with a white-painted frame hanging over the mantel of Kate's bedroom.  Somewhere down the line, the mirror frame was stripped of its paint and placed in storage in Kate's closet.  The frame has been freshly painted and now hangs just as it did over a hundred years ago.

The inventory sheet describes the overmantel as "Original - Came with house.  Very large, dark, wood-framed mirror, with crowns and balls carved along the top."

NOTE:  This will be the last column of this series.  Visit the Mansion to see the wonderful  "out of storage" additions featured over the past five months.
