40 years gift to city

Greetings!

Greetings from the Mansion!

April showers bring May flowers,  the May 15th opening of the Mansion's tour season and Mother's Day.  The Mansion is offering a special Mother's Day gift package. Details below.

In  December 1974, the city of Kalispell agreed to accept Alicia Conrad's offer - the Mansion would be preserved in perpetuity to honor the memory of her pioneering parents.  Your support over the years has made this 40-year anniversary celebration possible.  Thank you !

Victorian Houseplants: All the Rage

Conrad Mansion Fernery   Photo Courtesy Karen Weyer Photography

In colonial days, homes were too dark and cold to be hospitable to houseplants. But when the Age of Technology arrived and manufacturing advances produced larger and better window glass and heating the home was not dependent on fireplaces, houseplants were invited inside.

Victorians loved houseplants and larger homes had ferneries or bay windows whose sole purpose was to grow  houseplants.  The Mansion has a fernery on the south side of the house where sunlight streams in.

What were Victorian's favorite houseplants? Maidenhair ferns, Sword ferns, Holly ferns, Boston Ferns, Palm, and Aspidistra to name a few.  The sketch below represents a popular pastime in the 19th Century: an organized fern hunt. Found ferns could be added to ones fern collection, which was immensely popular.

A Gift from Rich and Judy Pettersen

 "the firm name meant honesty..."

This copy of  THE FINANCIER, a weekly journal published in New York on January 3, 1898, was recently donated by Rich and Judy Pettersen.  This edition is significant because it contains an article about the honesty and integrity of the Conrad brothers. William and Charles sold a bank in good faith, but two months later the bank failed with $750,000 of depositors money on its books.

When the brothers learned of the bank's failure, they voluntarily came forward and guaranteed every dollar on deposit, without knowing how much the total might be.  According to the article, "The action of the Conrads is one which is so remarkable in banking circles of the present day that it merits special mention, and Montana has every reason to be proud of such sturdy honesty and business integrity among her pioneer founders."

The 1898 journal will be on display in Mr. Conrad's library/office.

Out of Storage ...

During the Mansion's downtime,  staff has been busy removing sheets from furniture stored in the basement for many years.  Wonderful pieces were revealed - tables, chairs, footstools, etc.

This 1975 inventory photo shows an original black leather rocking chair.  It has been dusted, polished and brought out of the basement.  It now sits proudly in the Master Bedroom.

The inventory sheet describes the chair as "Original - Came with house.  Platform scroll top rocker with smooth black leather upholstery on back and seat and dark wood arms and legs.  There are silver-colored upholstery tacks across the front of the seat.  Decorative uprights between arm and seat."
