Meet Mary Lou
| |
Mary Lou Lumpkin has been a Volunteer at the Conrad Mansion working in the office and helping with tours for the past 1 1/2 years.
She loves the people who work at the Mansion and meeting new people during the season. She asks, "Who could ask for a more beautiful, interesting place to spend their time then at the Conrad?"
We are so grateful for her help throughout the year!
In her spare time, Mary Lou does lots of "grandkid" things including attending ball games and spoiling them. She also likes to read and relax with her pets.
Thanks to Mary Lou and all the great staff members that keep the mansion going strong.

Wooten Desk
By: Virginia Swan, Tour Guide
All of us who have visited "the Mansion" are familiar with the large portrait of Theodore Roosevelt that hangs on the north wall of the library. But, have you ever noticed the desk which sites just beneath it? This is a Wooten desk that in it's day was known as "The King of Desks."
One key unlocks the front to open two hinged doors revealing 110 compartments and a drop down writing surface all easily reachable from the desk chair. The Victorian businessman now had a place for everything. The legs of the desk have wheels making it easy to move and the desk was often loaded into the owner's railway car during trips. Not quite as convenient as a laptop or a smart phone, but state of the art for its day.
These desks were manufactured in Indianapolis from 1870 to 1884 and sold for $90 to $750. Today they go for anywhere from $25,000 to $250,000.
On your next visit I hope you will take a few minutes to appreciate this magnificent piece of history.
