Amelia Earhart Doll
By: Cindy Conner, Tour Guide
One of my favorite events at The Conrad Mansion is Death by Chocolate. It is a wonderful murder mystery with a cast of interesting characters, all of whom might be a murderer! Last April's event featured historical figures such as Lewis and Clark, Teddy Roosevelt, James J. Hill, and Amelia Earhart as possible suspects.
On my first day back to the house after the event, I made a walk- through of rooms before my first tour began. When I got to the nursery, there in the barrister bookcase, full of toys, was an Amelia Earhart doll! I had never noticed her before but identification was obvious. She was wearing faux leather boots and an aviator cap. Flying goggles were perched on her forehead. The finishing touch, a long, flowing, real silk scarf was trailing from about her neck! Where had she come from? Why hadn't I noticed her before? I suppose the recent event and cast of characters was fresh in my mind and for the first time the doll character just jumped out at me.
I couldn't experience a little thrill like that without a few questions coming to mind. Some research was in order. It turns out Amelia Earhart was a contempory of Alicia Conrad Campbell; in fact, they were only three years apart in age. In the late 1920's Amelia had begun setting aviation record for altitude, distance and speed. She wrote books and articles (Cosmopolitan magazine from 1928 to 1930) and she often lectured. She was a business woman, early supporter of women's rights, shy but charismatic, brave and daring. What a great role model for women of that time in history.
So, who had bought the doll? Who was it for? Our records didn't show, only that it was among the original items in the house. But in my mind it made perfect sense. Did Alicia know all about Amelia? Yes, she would have. Did she admire and respect her? My guess is yes. Did she buy her own 8-year old daughter, Timmie, an Amelia Earhart doll to demonstrate what a woman could do and become in this world? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she did. To me, that will be the story.
