It's Back to School Time!

The summer has quickly passed us by and maybe you or someone you know is anticipating the start of school.  After an indulgent few months of beach trips, picnics and lazy days, it's time to start packing lunches, checking homework, and attending PTA meetings.  This can be a crazy time of year for both parents and children.  Here are some helpful tips to smoothly transition your family back into the school year.

  1. Attend your child's Open House/Orientation.  So many times parents try to get ahead of the game and complete school shopping before they know what the requirements are for the school year.  Big mistake!!! School districts use the summer months to re-evaluate dress codes, supply lists and academic needs.  Attend the Orientation and then do your shopping.  You will save yourself a lot of headaches and money if you do!

  1. Get physical!  Schedule those yearly doctors' appointments early.  Make sure your children are in great shape, both physically and mentally, for the challenging school year ahead.  And don't forget about immunizations.  Check with your school to make sure your child is up to date!

  1. Get back on schedule.  Your family enjoyed the freedom to eat, sleep and play all summer long.  But, it's time to get back on schedule for the school year.  Start getting your family back to the normal schedule at least two weeks before school starts.  That first week of school is hectic.  An established schedule will make it much easier for everyone.

  1. Shop away!  Once you have attended the School Orientation take those lists and start shopping.  The first day of school is all about making a great first impression. Check out your child's favorite magazines to see what's trending in school wear this year. Help them look their best!

  1. Get that skin in order!  We all know teenage skin problems can reduce self-esteem.  Schedule an appointment for a facial and send your teen to school looking and feeling great!

  1. Mark your calendar.  Carefully read all the forms the school provides so you know what is expected of you and your child this year.  Post important dates on the family calendar hanging in the kitchen or other common area. The best way to start this school year is by being prepared and being aware of school events.

  1. Spend time with your family.  If you manage your time efficiently, you can have all the shopping and other important tasks completed before the start of school approaches.  Gather your family on that last free weekend and enjoy a picnic in the park. Let the kids pick out their favorite movie for a movie and popcorn night.  Whatever the activity may be, spend a day reveling in your family.  Frenzied days of homework assignments, science projects and ball games are ahead!
And finally, make time for you!  After taking care of everyone else, make an appointment for a relaxing spa treatment!

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane.

Ready for a blast from the past?  Summer is the perfect season for getting re-acquainted with old friends at those infamous
Class Reunions!

Remember that first crush?  That first football game?  And, of course, there's prom and graduation!  These are just a few of the fond memories we all have of high school days.

So, what happens at a class reunion?  Usually, it's a fun-filled weekend organized by the Class President or other designee.  There's dancing, dinner, poolside laughter, and viewing of old high school pictures.  It's so fun to find out what old friends are up to!  Are they married?  Do they have children?  What career choice did they make?  Reunions can be exciting, but can also cause anxiety because we want to look our best.  Here are some pointers for looking and feeling your best when you reconnect with your high school friends.

First, go ahead and get all the "pre-reunion" tasks completed.  RSVP for the event and make those hotel reservations and travel plans.  With this out of the way, you can focus on YOU.

Included in the reunion packet should be an itinerary of events for the weekend.  Will there be outside events?  A formal night?  Plan accordingly.  Start looking for outfits to fit each occasion.  Keep it trendy, fun and comfortable!!

As the reunion approaches, you may want to reserve some treatments at the spa.  Talk to your spa team about facials, body wraps, and weight loss programs to give you a healthy, youthful glow and have you feeling your best for your big event.  A great new do, a spray tan and a mani/pedi are the perfect final touches to send you off in style!

Don't fret about your upcoming class reunion. Enjoy it!  Start planning as soon as you get the invitation, and let your spa team assist you in looking and feeling fabulous!

Garlic Shrimp With Asparagus and Lemon

Ingredients:

1 lb shrimp, medium to large, peeled and deveined

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt (to taste)

black pepper, to taste

1 lemon

4 tablespoons olive oil or 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

4 medium garlic cloves, sliced thinly

3/4 lb asparagus, tough ends snapped off and cut into 2 inch lengths (about 2 cups)

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

2/3 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth

1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

Directions

Place shrimp on paper towels and dry very well.

Sprinkle shrimp with a bit of the salt and pepper.

Using a vegetable peeler, peel off strips of the lemon peel and then cut the strips into very thin long pieces; be sure to peel only the yellow part of the peel, not the bitter white part.

Cut lemon in half and juice it into a small dish, removing seeds.

Heat a deep 12 inch skillet (preferably NOT non-stick) over medium high heat for 1 minute.

Add 2 Tbsp of the oil and heat until it's shimmering hot -- just a few seconds.

Add the shrimp in a single layer and do not disturb it; let cook for about 2 minutes until browned.

Turn shrimp over and brown the other side, about 1 1/2 minutes, then transfer to a plate. Shrimp should not be cooked through.

Reduce heat to medium-low and add garlic, stirring for 30 seconds.

Add asparagus, lemon zest strips, red pepper flakes and a bit of salt and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes.

Add chicken broth and cover, simmering for 1-2 minutes until asparagus is almost done.

Stir cornstarch with 1 Tbsp water and stir into the pan.

Add shrimp back to the pan and cook another 1-2 minutes until done.

Stir in 1 Tbsp lemon juice, then taste and add more juice, salt and pepper if needed.

Enjoy!
