Nobody is completely sure about the origin of this,
the silliest of holidays. However urban legends say that most experts
give credit to Pope Gregory XIII, who, in the 1500s, gave the world
the Gregorian calendar.
In 1562, the Gregorian calendar moved the first day of the year from
April 1 to January 1. Word did eventually get around, but some people
were a bit slow to hear the news. These folks continued celebrating
the new year on April 1, unaware that they were now three months
behind the times. These "April fools" were tricked by those
in the know. The tradition eventually made its way to the USA &
it's still going strong.

Great Tips For Protecting Your Health in
Beauty Dept.
Environmental
Working Group is a terrific source for learning about the products we
use daily and whether they are safe or unsafe for us. As a
consumer health “watch dog” informant website, I highly
recommend you check them out. They take great pains to research
many interesting and scary truths about the ingredients that are in
all these things. Many of these products, from skin
lotions to moisturizers, shampoos, dish soap detergent, sunscreens,
etc. are unfortunately loaded with toxins that we would not have given
much thought to.
Some interesting facts
to share with you from them are underlined as follows:
- Your Body: Do
not use triclosan or triclocarbon found in hand sanitzer, and bar and
liquid soaps. You can use those with
ethyl alcohol or ethanol. Also you may find triclosan in
toothpaste, which should be avoided. Basically, these
chemicals disrupt your hormones. It is safer to wash your hands
well with soap and water than to use “Purell” type
products. There are hand cleaners available without triclosan
for use when no water is available.
- A recent lab study
found the chemical to exert both estrogenic and androgenic effects on
human breast cancer cells (Gee 2008). Studies of fish suggest
that triclosan may have weak androgenic (Foran 2000) or
anti-estrogenic effects (Matsumura 2005), while a metabolite of
triclosan may have estrogenic effects (Ishibashi 2004).
Look for organic products for skin,
hair, nails, soaps, cleaners, etc. if your budget allows. If you
can’t afford the price of organic soaps and skin care products,
then try to just splurge on the ones you would use the most, such as
your allover body moisturizer and body soaps. Those products
which you use on the largest amounts of your skin are the ones to
worry about the most, since they are absorbed right into the liver and
endocrine systems of our bodies.
For babies and children I
highly recommend going all the way when it comes to buying organic for
soap, shampoo and skin care, as their sensitive little bodies are most
susceptible to the dangers of these chemicals. Even Johnson
& Johnson is guilty of using ingredients that really are not
safe. Things like petroleum (in Vaseline and other products) are
actually not good for you as they are derived from petrol which is
great for our cars but not our bodies! According to studies,
mineral oil (a petroleum product found in many beauty products)
smothers the skin (the body’s largest organ), making it
impossible for it to breathe. In fact, because of the way mineral oil
works, it is a poor choice for beauty products for these reasons:
- It disrupts the
way the body naturally detoxifies;
- It slows the rate
at which cells are renewed, thereby damaging collagen, connective
tissue, and elastin – all of which contribute to the way skin looks
and feels;
- It results in
skin that ages prematurely
We need to be our own
label reading detectives for healthful safety. Unfortunately our
FDA does not protect us from the dangers of these ingredients, but you
can control what you decide to buy the most of if you learn how.

Bikini Season Waxing Tips
Perhaps I’m getting
ahead of myself, but we just had our first 50 degree day in what seems
like eons in New York City. So my mind is already wandering to beach
vacations and warm-weather gear, and I would guess your clients are
feeling the same way. Whether they are about to head out for Spring
Break or just thinking about bikini season, here are some great tips
from Beverly Hills anesthesiologist Dr. Edna Ma, who has a fabulous
numbing cream for waxing called BareEase. Share them with your clients!
- Seek a
professional—While most estheticians are licensed to
perform waxing, you want to find someone who specializes in waxing to
get the best results. Try seeking a referral or talking to them on the
phone beforehand to see if it’s someone you feel comfortable
with.
- Time it
right—Avoid waxing the week before your period when your
skin is the most sensitive. Also, if you’re waxing for something
special, it’s best to schedule your wax two days before it so
your skin is no longer red.
- Prep
properly—Trim your hair to about a quarter of an
inch—long enough for the wax to hold onto the hairs, but not too long
that it will be painful to remove. Dr. Ma also recommends exfoliating
the day before and popping an ibuprofen 30 minutes before your wax to
reduce the pain.
- Relax—Even though waxing might be
nerve-wracking your first time, tensing up will only make the process
painful. Try breathing in deeply when the wax is applied and exhaling
when the hair is being pulled.
- Take it easy
afterwards—To avoid bumps and irritation, it’s
best to avoid sun exposure, tight clothing, vigorous exercise or hot
showers for 24 hours after your wax.

Q. What is
Reflexology?
A. Reflexology is based on an ancient
Chinese therapy, reflexology involves manipulation of specific reflex
areas in the foot, hands, and ears that correspond to other parts of
the body. Application of pressure to these reflex areas stimulates
body organs and relieves areas of congestion. Reflexology
works with the body’s energy flow to stimulate self-healing and
maintain balance in physical function. This massage technique will
reduce pain, increase relaxation, and stimulate circulation of blood
and lymphatic fluids.

Love croutons in your
salad but trying to be healthier, try these homemade ones!
Ingredients:
- olive oil spray (I used my mister)
- 6 slices 100% whole grain bread
(I used Pepperidge Farm 15 grain)*
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- sea salt, to taste
- 3-4 tsp dried Italian seasoning
(or dried parsley)
- 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- fresh black pepper, to taste
Directions:
Preheat over to
300°F. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
Remove the crust
and cut the bread into small cubes.
Combine the garlic
powder, salt and Italian seasoning in a medium bowl.
Spread the bread
cubes on prepared cookie sheet in a single layer.
Spray the top with more oil to coat and top with half
of the seasoning and half of the shredded cheese;
season with black pepper then bake
for 14 minutes or until dry, crispy, and golden brown.
Turn the croutons over, spray a
little more oil and sprinkle with remaining
seasoning, black pepper and shredded cheese; bake for
an additional 15 minutes until done. Store croutons in air-tight
container or ziplock bag. Makes 4 cups. Enjoy!
