MONTHLY GARDENING TO-DO LIST

 Greetings!,

What traditions do you bring to your Holiday and Christmas celebrations? One of our traditions from Charbel's Lebanese heritage is setting up a large Nativity scene with mountain villages, sheep, and the manger with animals and baby Jesus. Another is sprouting lentil seeds on wet cotton to signify new life. On Ruth's German side, we have a "fruit stolen", a braided bread with candied fruit and citron baked inside that we eat Christmas morning.

What is green and red that you can add to your garden now that is also edible? Curly Parsley, Romaine Lettuce, and Strawberry plants! We also have some beautiful red Crimson "Dash" Dianthus to brighten up a planter or empty spot in your yard.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you all for a very good and exciting year in the garden center!

Peace & Good Cheer!

Plants of the Week

Curly Parsley: This fresh herb does so
beautifully in the winter months, you can use it as an ornamental plant mixed with pansies or red petunias for a lush green foliage. Parsley is so healthy for you, full of vitamins K, C, A, folate and iron! Makes a great Tabouleh salad (see recipe below), a nice green garnish for your Christmas dinner, and a tasty addition to many dishes!

Romaine Lettuce: Did you know that Romaine lettuce not only has a nice crisp texture and deep taste, one serving has an enormous amount of nutritional value! It is one of the healthiest foods for you! It boasts 107% of Vitamin K, 45% Vitamin A, 32% folate, 8% Fiber,7% Potassium, 5% Iron, Vitamins B, C and Beta carotene, which also makes it heart healthy! This lettuce grows well here in the cooler months. I think we all need to plant a few of these and eat more Romaine!

Festival Strawberry Plants: These strawberry plants are in 4" pots ready to transplant now. This variety grows well here in southern Louisiana. They produce many runners with flavorful fruit that is deep red on the outside and bright red on the inside. They can be grown in pots as well as the garden.

Dianthus "Dash" Crimson: This cold tolerant annual has a vibrant red color and is fragrant as well, a member of the Sweet William family. Plant it in a sunny spot in well-drained soil. It grows 15-20" tall and looks great combined with light blue or white Pansies.
Tabouleh Salad Recipe

2 bunches of parsley (curly or flat) remove large stems and discard, chop the leaves fine in food processor
cup cracked Bulgar wheat (fine) soaked in water for 10 minutes, squeeze out all remaining water
2 large red tomatoes chopped, small
 cup finely chopped onion
fresh Lemon juice, olive oil, salt & pepper to taste and dried mint (optional)

Combine parsley and wheat together well.
Add tomatoes, onion, and mint. Mix well.
Whisk together lemon, oil, salt & pepper and pour over salad.
A great Christmas Salad!
(It should look green & red with just a little white in it.)
Ornamental Cabbage & Kale

These annuals love the cold weather and become more vibrant in color during winter. They will grow in your yard from late fall until late spring. The cabbages have smooth leaf edges, while the Kale have serrated or ruffled edges. They take full sun and well-drained soil and will grow to 12" tall and almost as wide! These look great mass planted with a lower growing annual around them. They look edible but are really not very tasty.
Don't forget a Satsuma tree for Uncle Ben or a Lemon tree for Aunt Jane!
