Looking for the Next Green Genome Winners

Hillsborough Community College did not realize just how much sustainability work we were involved in until preparing for SEED's Green Genome award application in 2012. I think the process will be a great exercise for any college to uncover and organize their sustainability efforts. Since the time of the award, we are now integrating the three focus areas of Student Success, Workforce Development, and Sustainability into our long term strategic plan. I believe the Green Genome award gave us what we needed to gain the top level administrative support we need to move sustainability ideas into action.

SEED's Campus Living Lab MentorConnect Begins

SEED Mentor, Brain Lovell, speaks with Delta College's facilities management director about student learning opportunities around its "living wall."
The SEED Center launched its second MentorConnect cohort in January matching six colleges with peer experts for 6-month peer mentoring work. The 2014 cohort is focused solely on advancing campus living laboratories. The first campus site visit was held last week at Delta College in Bay City, Michigan.

After a tour of the campus and its various green facilities, Brian Lovell (SEED Mentor) worked with the college to flush out a number of exciting learning opportunities particularly within the college's building operations, automation, and analytics systems. Through this program, Delta College will identify tangible campus projects suitable for living lab coursework, implement new lesson plans, and document sustainability-based experiential learning project opportunities across academic credit and non-credit programs. Read more about last year's program.
Building Sustainability into the College Strategic Plan

As sustainability activities are often dispersed across organizational units and campuses, embedding these principles into the college's guiding documents can mean the difference between an isolated classroom recycling project and full integration across the institution. Learn how colleges have, through their institutional strategic planning processes, incorporated sustainability components into strategic planning documents, facility master plans, and even employees' work procedures. Once sustainability is part of the institution's DNA the efforts endure as presidents and trustees come and go.
