While community colleges have increased their sustainability practices and devoted more attention to sustainability in the classroom, few have assessed student learning of sustainability. Despite increased attention to sustainable practices at colleges across the country, little is known about how much community college students know about sustainability and where they need to improve. Moraine Valley Community College has conducted a project that captures data on sustainability learning in a variety of courses, provides instructors with a concise measurement device, and establishes a way forward for sustainability and student learning at its campus.
Read more on the college's sustainability assessment project, written by J. Gabe Estill and Stephenie Presseller.Watch their April 16, 2013 webinar on assessing sustainability in community college courses and download the general education rubric.

Using Sustainability Efforts on Campus as Learning Labs
Over the past decade, St. Clair County Community College (SC4) in Michigan has transformed its 25-acre campus into a sustainable "living laboratory." Green roofs dot the tops of buildings, a bioswale cleans tens of thousands of gallons of rainwater and alternative energy implementations like solar panels, wind turbines and a geothermal field are generating energy to power computer labs and other facilities. Each of these green projects serves a dual purpose: reducing the college's carbon footprint, while also providing students real-world, hands-on learning opportunities. Read more.
