Welcome in the New Year with Great Tools!

Dear SEED Center Supporters,

The end of ARRA money for clean technology program development has forced many community colleges to take a step back and ask two pointed questions: 1) what is the real future of the green economy in our region?; and 2) what is my college's education and training niche within that?

At our college, Los Angeles Trade & Technical College, we are excited about tools that we've recently developed to help colleges better understand where their green competitive advantage lies.  Whether a college is only beginning to explore the development of green programs of study; has specially funded green training programs and must soon decide to sustain them or not; or has some well-established green programs of study and wishes to explore adding additional ones, the process for determining the best course of action involves careful consideration of a number of factors to maximize success.  Our tool, The Competitive Advantage Analysis Tool, summarizes and assesses key internal and external factors (e.g., energy prices, state industry incentives) that might drive growth in various clean economy sectors. Data, unique to each college, are presented graphically in a spider diagram and will assist colleges in identifying strengths and challenges, prioritizing green programs of study, and identifying strategies and next steps for maximizing their investment in this area.

We will be unveiling this tool at the SEED Center's 3rd annual training, entitled the NEW New Green Economy: Charting a Course for Community Colleges at the WDI Conference in San Diego, CA on January 30.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Marcy Drummond

Last month we sent a data collection link to the college presidents of every SEED Member college. If you are with a college please keep an eye out for this email as it may likely get forwarded to you. It will only take 15 minutes and is your opportunity to talk about where your college is succeeding and where you need help to continue to educate for and build the green economy. Be sure to do this before January 31, 2013! If you do it by January 18th you will be entered into a drawing to receive a stipend with a value of $1,500 to cover the cost to attend AACC's Workforce Development Institute in late January 2013. If you have any questions, please contact us.

In December 2012, as part of SEED's Mentor Connect program, Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) hosted a week-long hybrid vehicle technology training program for 17 automotive instructors from 11 different colleges. The professional development opportunity was hosted by Elizabethtown Community and Technical College's automotive program. Read more.

The training was facilitated by the KCTCS partnership with the SEED Center and its Mentor Connect program which links colleges together for intense information sharing and technical assistance opportunities. Learn how you can become engaged in this ongoing program by attending our WDI Preconference workshop or by contacting us.

As the SEED Center works to bring you publications, webinars, workshops and other projects designed to facilitate support for community colleges in building the green, don't miss the chance to take the free Green Genome Online Self-Assessment. This free tool is designed for community colleges to quickly gauge how well they are leading their green economy initiatives today and where they should prioritize investments. Read more.
