Greetings!
One of my friends responded to the prior flood insurance e-blast with another link you may find useful:
This site allows you to create your own flood risk profile - sort of. At any rate, it's another tool to use when evaluating insurance coverage or mitigation options. At the very least, it gives more information about specific locations. And although the flood insurance situation is still - pardon the pun - fluid, knowledge is power, and the more you know, the better decisions you'll make.
But in the meantime, has anyone else thought about going back to the way the insurance industry originated, and starting up a local company that would collect premiums from local people, and disburse locally when needed? Instead, it seems to me insurance companies today have become financial services companies whose reason for existence is to make as much profit as possible. They take our money, invest globally (to maximize returns), and pay billions to others for storms we haven't had. Then they raise our rates excessively. And that's probably an understatement.
Will you be the entrepreneur/politician/idealist who makes flood insurance sensible again, or do you know the person who can be? Let's start this conversation. There are too many people around here who will be spending far too much on insurance they haven't needed, and probably won't need. For those with conventional loans, there will be no choice.
Let's raise our voices, make this go viral, and make the "power of the people" a reality.
Cordially,
Nadine
