The International Longshore and Warehouse Union's current contract expired on July 1, 2014. There have been ongoing negotiation issues between the ILWU and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) involving continuing health care coverage and retirement plans, however limited information is available due to an agreement between the two parties to not negotiate the contract in the press.

No progress has been reported as work at the negotiating table and at the ports continues. Some importers are exploring alternatives to West Coast arrivals to mitigate the risk of a strike.
