India's Nhava Sheva Port on 48 Hr Strike
The Nhava Sheva Port, officially Jawaharlal Nehru Port and India's largest container gateway, is in the midst of a general strike called to protest against the government's planned pro-market reforms. Nhava Sheva handles nearly 60% of cargo imported and exported by India. Unionized dock workers have walked off the job at other major state-owned ports, including Mumbai, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Cochin and Tuticorin. The strike is scheduled to continue until midnight Thursday.
Besides dockworkers, truckers, seafarers, shipyard workers, rail workers, public sector employees and workers from other sections are also participating in the two-day protest. The two day work stoppage is expected to cost the nation approximately $3.7 billion.
We are continuing to monitor the situation closely. Please contact your move manager if you have any questions and for the latest information.
