Pomona College Master Plan, Zone Change and EIR are Approved by City Council
Sometimes we must agree to disagree! The recent Master Plan presented by Pomona College that includes moving historic Renwick House and demolishing a number of historic structures to make way for new institutional buildings is no exception. Why did one element of this project, a new museum campus, evoke such a strong and emotional response from the community?
Location, Location, Location Something that I think we can all agree on is that a new museum would be fantastic! The issue was not to have a new museum or not, it was not what - but where! We felt that the proposed museum site (west side of College Ave. between 2nd St. and Bonita) is a valuable historic resource containing heritage homes and landscapes, whose character should be retained and celebrated - basically, why destroy a part of our cultural history in order to make room for new history when seemingly other potential sites exist?
So now what? Although the City Council voted to approve Pomona's Master Plan and zone change, the project is not over. The public still has an opportunity to be involved in the process, there are many approvals that need to happen, involving design review, landscape design and documentation of historic structures. The citizens of Claremont will have an opportunity to weigh-in and give their perspective on the process - if you would like to be added to an email list of updates regarding this project, please click here: info@claremontheritage.org
CLAREMONT HERITAGE LAUNCHES NEW COMMUNITY CALENDAR!
In an effort to support our local community, Claremont Heritage is launching a new Community Calendar that will promote cultural events around town.
As part of our Claremont Matters initiative, the calendar will be updated regularly with events and happenings that are open to the public. Local organizations and businesses will also be featured who support the cultural activities that make Claremont a special place to live and work. The Calendar is currently available as a beta version that we would like input on - please take a look and let us know if you have any questions or suggestions.
OUR MISSION is to advance, preserve and celebrate the historic, architectural, natural and cultural resources of our community through collaboration, education and advocacy. Claremont Heritage was formed by citizens who were concerned that a number of iconic buildings were demolished in the 1960s and 70s such as the historic Claremont Inn and Public Library. Since then, we have worked with the City and community to save a number of the iconic structures that were once threatened with demolition such as the Packing House, Ice House (Back Abbey), Claremont Depot (now home to the Claremont Museum of Art) and the Padua Hills Theatre. Our goal is to keep Claremont's history alive and honor the past to inform the future.
In Claremont, we have much to be thankful for and Claremont Heritage is celebrating our City with our Claremont Matters initiative. Honoring the past to inform the future ensures that future generations will be able to experience and enjoy our unique town.
