MARCH 2016
Experience and Celebrate our Heritage

MARCH 2016 UPDATE

Established in 1976, 2016 marks the 40th year of Claremont Heritage's service to the Claremont community! 40 years dedicated to fulfilling the mission to advance, preserve and celebrate the historic, architectural, natural and cultural resources of the community.  Claremont Heritage is an inclusive community not for profit organization - see how you can become involved HERE!

In 2016 Claremont Heritage joins the National Trust for Historic Preservation in celebrating their initiative "This Place Matters" with our 2016 Theme CLAREMONT MATTERS!

As stated in our General Plan:
"Critical to Claremont's quality of life is the celebration and active preservation of our heritage."  It goes on to say that Claremont, a regional leader in preservation, is committed to maintaining and enhancing our cultural and architectural heritage." I would also add to that our natural environment.

As the only not-for-profit organization in Claremont charged with documenting, maintaining and disseminating our City's history the responsibility is enormous. History does not stop for anyone, it is a continual process that unless documented can be lost forever.

How does it work? People are the heart of any community, people have memories, people have stories, stories are the articulation of history -

We record this history by conducting oral histories - in our case we film our oral histories whenever possible - we can then combine the "story telling" with other visual information such as photographs, newspaper clippings, old home movies and cultural ephemera to create a visual record that can be experienced by anyone, anywhere in the world with access to the internet.

One of the goals of Claremont Matters will be to strengthen our cultural identity and sense of place. This can also translate to economic development in the form of Cultural Heritage Tourism. The stories we tell will educate, enlighten and encourage visitors to want to experience our unique and beautiful City.

We need your help!  Please let us know if you or someone you know would like to share their stories about Claremont.  Or if you have old photographs, building plans, home movies, ephemera or artwork that reflects our rich heritage.  We are always looking for items to enhance our archives and educational programs - an added benefit is that these donations can be viewed as a charitable contribution and are tax deductible!

Please contact Claremont Heritage at 909.621.0848 or [email protected]

Sincerely,

Lorena creates photography projects that straddle the areas of documentary, journalism and fine art. Her work is inspired by various cultural and academic spheres including graphic design, forensics, sociology, geography, economics, communication, and anthropology. She believes strongly in the possibility of the still image to communicate and describe aspects of contemporary social and cultural experience, and selects image making tools that best articulate her ideas.  Lorena's work is shown both nationally and internationally in venues as diverse as the The Photographers' Gallery in London, the United Nations headquarters in New York City, the Arc Light Theater in Hollywood and the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art. Her book, "The Michael Jacksons", and ethnograpic monograph on the subculture of Michael Jackson impersonators was published in 2014.

Lorena received an MFA from the University of Oregon, studied sociology at The New School for Social Research in New York City, and teaches photojournalism and documentary storytelling in the Communication department at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California.
