LA COUNTY FAIR GOES MID-CENTURY MODERN
The Millard Sheets Center for the Arts exhibit goes Mid-Century Modern (MCM) this year to immerse students in the wonder, imagination and excitement that colored the world of their grandparents and created so much of what we all take for granted today. Created by Tony Sheets, Millard Sheets son, the exhibition explores the 20 years following the Depression and World War Two (1945-1965) when the United States grew into the most affluent, promising, colorful and optimistic nation the world has ever known. Art, architecture, advertising, fashion, entertainment, cars, sports, travel, dance, children's products; all created a design for living that was full of choices, possibilities and excitement about the future. Employing interactive displays, storytelling, live art, a wealth of artistic designs and artifacts of the time, Mid-Century Modern aims to engage students of all ages. Through September 28th!

After you've perused the Mid-Century Modern: Retro, Classic, Cool exhibition at the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts, step outside for free plein air painting and glass-blowing demos. Nearby take a gander at the 17-ton, 24-foot-tall statue of a ranchero carved in 1953 from a giant Sequoia by local sculptor John Svenson.

SHELTON PARK PERFORMANCE STAGE CLOSER TO REALITY
Model of proposed stage designed by Wheeler & Wheeler Architects
Imagine a beautiful, intimate stage nestled under the trees of Claremont's Shelton Park (corner of Bonita and Harvard Avenues). Imagine the wide range of events that the community will enjoy with the addition of this permanent performance stage including performances by local musicians; art shows; a new venue for use by children from the Claremont school system; and The Claremont Colleges students and faculty music, art, thesis and doctoral presentations. Shelton Park also provides a third venue for events like Friday Nights Live (currently held Claremont Square Village Plaza west of Indian Hill Blvd., in front of the Claremont Chamber office and at the plaza adjacent to City Hall Council Chamber), helping introduce participants to all areas of the Village. The Shelton Park Stage will be located in the northeast corner of the park - the ideal bookend to the John Fisher sculpture.
The City Council approved the project in concept. The Village Marketing Group (VMG), a subgroup of the Chamber Commerce, is now raising $250,000 to make the dream a reality. More information HERE
