CLAREMONT ART + ARCHITECTURE
IN THE NEWS!

A towering rainbow of mosaic tiles once again glitters at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.

The original mural, which soared 31 stories up the side of the Rainbow Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, was unveiled in 1968. Exposure to the sun and sea air caused the creation by Pomona native Millard Sheets to fade.

Recognizing the mural's uniqueness and value, Hilton Hotels spent more than $4 million on a replica that's 286 feet tall by 26 feet wide.  Tony Sheets, an artist in his own right and son of Millard, oversaw the project and even added some new elements.  The result is breathtaking!

"It is synonymous with Waikiki and is actually a celebrity in its own right," Jerry Gibson, a Hilton Hawaii vice president, said in a news release. "It has been the backdrop in many movies, TV shows and thousands of vacation photos taken on Waikiki Beach."

British company Johnson Tiles used intricate studies of the original version comparisons to re-create the mural. The new version contains 31,000 tiles, nearly twice the 16,000 in Sheets' original piece.

The new mural was unveiled during a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony in late June.

NEW CLAREMONT BOOK RELEASED!

A new publication "Images of America - Claremont" is hot off the presses!  Produced by Claremont Heritage and published by Arcadia Publishing, this comprehensive book covers the history of Claremont from pre-settler days to the post-war housing boom and everything in-between.  With 128 pages and over 200 photographs, this book tells the story of Claremont that will enlighten and inform readers.

Situated along the eastern border of Los Angeles County and at the foot of the majestic San Gabriel Mountains is the community of Claremont. The city, founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1907, quickly became one of Southern California's most unique communities. Known as the "City of Trees and PhDs," Claremont has become famous for its lush oak-and-sycamore-lined boulevards, beautifully crafted architecture, and as the home of the highly praised liberal arts schools of the Claremont Colleges. First settled by the Serrano peoples on Indian Hill Mesa and once part of the vast Rancho San Jose, Claremont has gone through several important periods, including expanding from a frontier town to a Congregationalist hub and transitioning from a citrus powerhouse to an artist colony. Equal parts suburban community and college town, Claremont has attracted many for its picturesque setting and charming small-town feel.

Authors Eva Landsberg and Sean Stanley, in partnership with Claremont Heritage, have sought to preserve Claremont's rich history through the use of vintage photographs from the archives of the Claremont Heritage, the Ella Strong Denison Library on the Scripps College campus, and the Special Collections at Honnold/Mudd Library of the Claremont Colleges. Special thanks goes to the Claremont Courier for the collection of photographs they donated to Claremont Heritage several decades ago and to the late Judy Wright, without whom Claremont's history would not have been so accurately documented. These images are presented in an attempt to honor and preserve the history of Claremont and its unique and vibrant community.
