Why is Ag Literacy Important?
2. Awareness of Ag in Everyday Life

During a school visit, Sherry Saylor, Chair of the AFB Women's Leadership Committee, was talking to a 1st grader about agriculture being everywhere. He was convinced he could stump her! "What about macaroni and cheese?" he asked. Sherry explained the pasta was made from wheat, and the cheese was from a dairy farm. "Ok.. Pizza?" he questioned. Sherry told him about tomatoes and herbs. "Hot dogs?!" he was sure he had stumped her now! Nope, hog farmers, or beef ranchers depending on the brand.

The little boy was really surprised at how Sherry could connect all of his favorite treats back to a farm. However, being a little boy, and therefore very determined, he finally got her with "bugs." While they are not part of our everyday diet, the little boy seemed to think his father ate them regularly. Interesting, any bug farmers out there?

Many people forget how much we rely on agriculture for our daily lives. The Foundation is working on increasing ag literacy through our educational resources. You can help.
