 Equine Canada Health Advisory:

Import Restrictions Lifted for Horses from United States Entering Canada
due to
Vesicular Stomatitis

Ottawa, Ont., April 14, 2015 - Equine Canada would like to inform all stakeholders that effective immediately the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has eliminated all vesicular stomatitis (VS) import restrictions for horses from United States entering Canada as a result of additional information it received from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regarding the recent cases of VS reported in the US.

CFIA reduced VS restrictions to a county level on March 13, 2015. Now, the restrictions that applied to only Santa Cruz County in Arizona have also been lifted as of April, 13, 2015.

Import conditions in AIRS have been adjusted accordingly. [http://airs-sari.inspection.gc.ca/airs_external/english/decisions-eng.aspx]

Further information on vesicular stomatitis, its clinical signs and transmission can be found on the CFIA Vesicular Stomatitis Fact Sheet.

It is important to note that Piroplasmosis related import conditions remain in place for horses from Texas and New Mexico.
