AQHA News "Bits"

1. Competition Licenses

Annual AQHA Incentive Fund competition licenses will expire December 31. If the horse owner wishes to receive money for points earned in 2014, they must complete a competition license for each Incentive Fund-nominated horse before the horse competes.

To receive Incentive Fund payout, owners must pay a competition license fee of $50 for the amateur division and $50 for the open division per horse. The fee can be paid any time during the year, and will become effective when it's received by AQHA or by show management. Points earned prior to paying the annual license fee will not be Incentive Fund-eligible.
To download the competition license form, click the "Incentive Fund" link above.

2. AQHA Rules Changes:

With the end of the year approaching, please keep in mind that changes to AQHA's rules need to be submitted prior to December 31 to be placed on standing committee agendas for review at next year's convention.

At  AQHA Rule Change Forms, you'll find two versions of the form for your convenience: one in Microsoft Word and one that is a PDF. Once you have completed the form, please return it via email to [email protected]
Submitted rule changes, detailing reasons for the change, will be placed on the respective committee's agenda and placed on AQHA's website where AQHA members can submit comments.

4. 2014 AQHA World Shows Qualifying Points:

The points required to qualify for the AQHA world championship shows have been modified for 2014.

*Built Ford Tough AQHYA World Championship Show, qualifying period May 1, 2013 - April 30, 2014, view Ford Youth World qualifying points
*Adequan Select World Championship Show, qualifying period June 1, 2013 - May 31, 2014, view Adequan Select World qualifying points
*Bank of America Amateur World Championship Show, qualifying period August 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014, view Bank of America Amateur qualifying points
*AQHA Open World Championship Show, qualifying period August 1, 2013 - July 31, 2014, view AQHA Open qualifying points

Points earned in Level 2 and Level 3 classes will count toward 2014 AQHA world championship qualification, and the points in both levels will carry the same weight. Points earned in introductory, Rookie and Level 1 classes will not count towards world show qualification or invitation.

Separate Level 2 finals will not be held at the 2014 world shows, but top-placing Level 2-eligible entries will be recognized during the class finals. These awards will be similar to the previous Intermediate awards.

Additionally, halter competitors now have a new way to earn an invitation to the 2014 world shows. Amateur, Select amateur and open halter competitors (not including performance halter) can earn an invitation to the 2014 world shows by competing at a designated number of shows during the respective qualifying period.

  • Amateur and Select amateur: Show at 10 shows in a halter class. Shows will be counted by show numbers on a one-horse, one-exhibitor basis.
  • Open: Show at 20 shows in a halter class. Shows will be counted by show numbers.
The amateur-horse combination will be required to reach at least half the points set as the minimum to be invited as a state/provincial invitee in each particular class. This program is operated by AQHA, not the AQHA affiliates, and exhibitors are invited based on the state/province in which they reside, not where they show. Ties will be broken by the exhibitor who won the last point or 0.5 point first.

5. Young Horse Development Program"

The Young Horse Development Program was created to give AQHYA members who want to participate in hands-on horse training, an opportunity that will teach them the fundamentals of horsemanship. The horses used in the program were bred by AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders, which consist of working cattle ranches with a remuda of at least five AQHA-registered mares that produce ranch horses. The participating Ranching Heritage Breeders offered weanlings for the program participants to judge, select, purchase, raise and train. The ranchers also mentored these young horsemen, teaching them responsibility and goal-setting, which are important components of equine ownership.
