 AQHA News "Bits"
Bettering the Breed
At the Convention Monday Board of Directors meeting, members approved the AQHA Stud Book and Registration committee's recommendations to require 1) that all stallions exposed to 25 or more mares during the 2014 breeding season be required to have a genetic disease panel test on file with AQHA prior to the registration of their foals resulting from breedings occurring after January 1, 2014 and 2) that all stallions will be required to have a genetic disease panel test on file with AQHA prior to the registration of their foals resulting from breedings occurring after January 1, 2015. These new rules will be denoted as Rule REG108.4 and REG108.5 in the 2014 AQHA Official Handbook . AQHA offers a panel test for five genetic diseases - glycogen branching enzyme deficiency (GBED), hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA), hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP), malignant hyperthermia (MH) and Type 1 polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM1). These panel tests, which are processed by the University of California-Davis, were offered for the first time in February 2012. The Stud Book and Registration Committee's report as well as all other standing committee reports from the 2013 AQHA Convention are available for viewing at www.aqha.com/convention
On the Web
AQHA's Web Team has been running a number of contests and interactive events on the AQHA Facebook page. One of the contests is "My 40" and consists of great prize packages from our corporate partners. The other is a photo contest to fill the pages of the 2014 AQHA Calendar, which I mentioned earlier. AQHA members have been posting pictures of their new foals on the AQHA Facebook page. Some of those photos are also included in the "Barn Babies" series that's been running in The American Quarter Horse Journal since February. Owners often ask for help on Facebook with the color of their foals, and our equine color specialists help them figure out the genetics. The Journal is highlighting a different exhibitor each week online in "In the Spotlight." This week's featured competitor was Rose Holt, a horse-show mom who has survived a battle with cancer and is now taking her turn in the show pen. "In the Spotlight" highlights our hard-working members for their efforts inside and outside the ring. More than 1.4 million minutes have been devoted to watching AQHA's YouTube videos since the first of the year. Our viewers love watching our segments on Quarter Horse ranches, world show successes, and tips and advice. One of the videos on AQHA's YouTube channel is "My Days With Kit," a series of videos that follows AQHYA member Renee Pope as she trains her AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Program filly, TRR A Stylish Kit, aka "Kit."
Horseback Riding Program The AQHA Horseback Riding Program is rewarding participants with bigger and better prizes. With the support of AQHA's corporate partners, riders have the chance to earn Professional's Choice products, Drysdales gift certificates, a Montana Silversmiths belt buckle and much more. The Horseback Riding Program is a way for AQHA to reward members who simply enjoy riding, whether they own a horse, lease a horse or take lessons. To learn more about the Horseback Riding Program, visit www.aqha.com/riding or call customer service at (806) 376-4811. |
