AQHA Young Horse Development Project

AQHYA members have the chance to earn scholarships and
further their education of horse training, care and health.

AQHA recognizes the importance of engaging youth within the equine industry, and the Association values the responsibility and education that a young horseman gains through raising a horse. Those realizations were the fuel behind creating the AQHA Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Project, a program conceived by the AQHA Ranching Council and the American Quarter Horse Youth Association

The Young Horse Development Project offers AQHYA members the chance to earn scholarships, plus further their education of horse training, care and health. For the project, accepted AQHYA members have the chance to receive a free weanling from several generous AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders.

At this time, there are approximately 16 free weanlings that have been donated by Ranching Heritage Breeders. To be eligible to receive a free foal, youth applicants must submit their applications to receive a foal by August 24, 2012.

Eligible foals have been donated from:

The second way youth can participate in the Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Project is to purchase a Ranching Heritage Challenge-nominated foal from a Ranching Heritage Breeder before October 1, 2012.

Whether AQHYA members receive a free foal or purchase one, they are eligible to participate in the Ranching Heritage Young Horse Development Project. From the time they obtain a weanling, the AQHYA members work with and train their foals, then exhibit the foals at an AQHA, 4-H or other local show and maintain a record book supplied by AQHA.

Ultimately, the project participants have the chance to win scholarships and awards, not to mention the lifetime of values they earn through working with and training their own weanling.

Youth applicants must be AQHYA members, and applications to receive a foal for this year's selection are due August 24, 2012.
