Greetings, ,

Thank you for participating in the "Mental Gymnastics" challenge in this month's WarehouseTWO e-Newsletter.  Here are the results...
mg_dough The Challenge
A lump of fresh, unbaked bread dough, equal in volume to one standard measuring cup, is placed into a mixing bowl at 12:15PM.  The yeast causes the dough to rise, doubling in volume every hour.  At 4:45PM, the dough has expanded to half the volume of the bowl.

At what time will the dough completely fill the bowl?

The Correct Answer

5:45PM

The key pieces of information needed to solve this challenge are:
  1. "the dough...doubling in volume every hour"
  2. "At 4:45PM, the dough (fills) half the volume of the bowl."

With this information, you can determine that one hour after 4:45PM, the dough will double in size, filling the bowl.

The original volume of the dough, the time that the dough was placed in the bowl and the (unknown) size of the bowl are inconsequential bits of information.
