Greetings, ,

Thank you for participating in the "Mental Gymnastics" challenge in this month's WarehouseTWO e-Newsletter.  Here are the results...
The Challenge
Know your molecules!  For each molecule illustrated below, submit the correct scientific name of the substance that the illustration represents.
2012.11_mg_graphic

The Correct Answer

#1  methane (more information)
#2  ozone or trioxygen (more information)
#3  nitrous oxide or dinitrogen monoxide (more information)
#4  hydrogen peroxide or dihydrogen dioxide (more information)
#5  ethanol or ethyl alcohol (more information)
#6  polytetrafluoroethylene (more information)

In the wording of the challenge, we clearly stated that we wanted the "scientific name" for each substance.  Therefore, we did not accept "Teflon" as an acceptable answer for substance #6.  ("Teflon" is a trade name of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company.)  We also disqualified responses to #6 that did not start with "poly".  (The "n" in the lower right-hand corner designated the molecule as a polymer, not its monomer.  Also, the monomer would have had a double bond between the two carbon atoms, which the illustration does not.)

The Winners
The winners of this month's "Mental Gymnastics" challenge are:
  • Patrick McMahon, Darcoid Nor-Cal Seal (Oakland, CA USA) (1st correct respondent)
  • Steven Samaniego, Womack Machine Supply (Farmers Branch, TX USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
  • Dennis Knepel, Kaman Industrial Technologies (New Berlin, WI USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
  • Jeff Wengler, Intek Systems (Warrendale, PA USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
  • Don Benson, Tribute Inc. (Hudson, OH USA) (picked at random from all other correct respondents)
Thank you again for participating in this month's "Mental Gymnastics" challenge.  Look for another challenge in next month's WarehouseTWO eNewsletter!

Don't forget:  if you have a good "WarehouseTWO success story", we would love to hear about it.

Sincerely,
