Nothing says summer like lemonade

My mom Sally, and her mom before her, loved a good picnic, and in our family we'll find any excuse to host one. So this week, I'm sharing my recipe for Basil Lemonade, the perfect complement to any picnic or outdoor summer celebration. A delicious drink for the whole family, and easy to adapt for the grownups that like their drinks to pack more punch - simply add your favorite vodka or tequila! Hostess and home gourmet extraordinaire Peggy Chandler gets credit for this delicious lemonade recipe. I first discovered it at a Fourth of July party, and have since served it often, especially at luncheons for my cookbook. It always gets rave reviews, and you can serve it as is, or add your liquor of choice (vodka or tequila both work well).
Ingredients:
- 4 cups packed basil sprigs, plus more for garnish
- 6 to 7 cups water, divided
- 2 cups sugar
- 9 strips lemon peel
- 2 1/2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice

On Deck: A Well Seasoned Kitchen Remodel

After many years and much ado, my husband and I agreed it was time to remodel our kitchen. We're currently in the midst of demolition, and dust, and lots of decisions. I'm excited to share our experiences - which includes how hard it is to wash a coffee pot in a bathroom sink, the importance of ductwork, and the fun part -- our adventures as we find sustenance at new restaurants all over town.
