Experts Agree: For Fish, Abundance is Everything

More fish in the water means economic vitality for waterfront communities through fishing and recreation, as well as a healthy and vibrant natural environment for generations to come.

Our recent Sustainable Fisheries Forum, featuring scientists, fishermen, and advocates, discussed essential tools for a way forward. "Forage fish need to be extremely abundant so they support not only fisheries but also the entire food web," asserted Steve Gephard, biologist for CT DEEP. Captain Dave Monti of No Fluke Fishing Charters added "Whatever creates an abundance of fish is good for recreational fishing and charter fishing."

The key step in realizing this better future is the re-authorization of the gold standard of fisheries management - the Magnuson-Stevens Act. Since 2000, the MSA has rebuilt 34 fisheries and strengthened thousands of coastal communities. Building on these successes by limiting by-catch and overfishing, restoring habitat, and looking at the marine food web as a whole are best for our fish and our communities.

Unfortunately, the MSA is under attack.

The Hastings Bill - dubbed "The Empty Oceans Act" - would undermine the key principles of the MSA that have brought decades of success. This bad bill passed the House Natural Resource committee last week.

For fish, abundance is everything. If you enjoy casting a line into the deep blue sea, or sitting before a bountiful seafood dinner, consider standing up before its too late.

Thank you.
