A Legislative Session Update

The first two months of Connecticut's legislative session have been busy and productive. Going into the final month, we've put together information about where each bill stands on our blog, Green Cities Blue Waters.

Here's a quick summary of our top priorities:
  • Fracking Waste: The legislature is considering two approaches to fracking waste: a ban, and regulation. We support a ban on bringing fracking waste into Connecticut because we are concerned DEEP does not have the resources to regulate this toxic waste adequately. It's especially important that fracking waste not be treated in our sewage treatment plants--other states have tried this and failed.
  • Subdivisions and Public Input: We oppose a terrible bill that would eliminate all local public hearings for subdivision proposals. We're disappointed such a blatantly anti-environment and anti-democratic bill has gotten as far as it has, and we'll be working with other legislators to defeat it.
  • Methane Leaks: This bill is moving forward, but in a weaker form that allows, rather than requiring, PURA to investigate methane leaks and to cap the amount of money gas companies recover for lost and unaccounted for gas. We're working with legislators to strengthen the bill.

Visit our blog for more information on these bills and to catch up on all the other issues we're working on in Hartford: clean energy, the Blue Plan for Long Island Sound, tree-trimming, transportation funding, and more to protect and improve our land, air, and water!

A simple phone call or email can make a huge difference!

Please take a few minutes to call your state senator and representative or legislative leadership in Hartford and tell them your environmental priorities. Ask them them to support bills that protect Connecticut's environment & Long Island Sound, and to help stop bills that would damage our future.

You can look up your state senator and representative on the CGA website or at votesmart.org. Call and say you're a constituent, and ask how they plan to vote on the issues that matter most to you.
