Please take just a few minutes today to contact your state senator and state representative and let them know you love Connecticut's state parks and forests and you support Raised Bill 70 to protect them!
You can find your state legislators' names, phone numbers, and email addresses on the CGA website or at votesmart.org. Or, you can call these switchboards and ask to be connected to your legislators by name.
Senate Democrats: 800-842-1420
Senate Republicans: 800-842-1421
House Democrats: 800-842-8267
House Republicans: 800-842-1423
An aide will answer the phone. Just say what town you're from and that you're asking your senator and representative to support the Environment Committee's Raised Bill 70 to protect our state lands.
Thank you!
Our state parks and forests should be protected in perpetuity for the enjoyment of all Connecticut residents. But a recent report from the Council on Environmental Quality shows that they're in more danger than you think.
The state legislature's Environment Committee has raised a bill to strengthen protections for these important lands. Raised Bill 70 will:
- Classify lands controlled by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the Department of Agriculture as "land of high conservation value" unless the commissioners formally declare otherwise.
- Clarify that it's state policy to preserve these lands and their resources.
- Require DEEP and DoAg to put a conservation restriction on the deed for lands of high conservation value to protect them from being developed.
- Make the process of transferring state lands from one owner to another more transparent.
Can you do more?
Come to the bill's public hearing next Wednesday to speak up for our public lands. The hearing will start at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, February 19 at the Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Ave, Hartford. If you plan to attend, please let us know and we'll make sure you get the latest details on how to sign up to speak.
You can also submit written comments to the Environment Committee by emailing them to Env.Testimony@cga.ct.gov by Wednesday morning. Please say you "support Raised Bill 70, An Act Concerning the Preservation of Lands under the Control of DEEP and DoAg" and please send a copy of your testimony to your own legislators and to us at lmcmillan@ctenvironment.org.
Thank you!
